Orthopedic Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Orthopedic Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Orthopedic Intern, you need a solid background in human anatomy, musculoskeletal systems, and clinical assessment, typically achieved through completion of medical school and relevant rotations. Familiarity with radiology tools, electronic medical records (EMRs), and basic orthopedic surgical instruments is commonly required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well under pressure are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate diagnoses, effective patient care, and seamless collaboration within orthopedic teams.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an Orthopedic Intern during a rotation?

As an Orthopedic Intern, you'll be involved in a variety of tasks such as assisting in surgeries, performing patient assessments, managing pre- and post-operative care, and participating in daily rounds. You'll also have the opportunity to shadow experienced orthopedic surgeons, engage in hands-on skills training, and attend educational conferences or seminars. The environment is fast-paced and collaborative, with interns often working closely with residents, fellows, attending physicians, and allied health staff. This role provides a strong foundation in orthopedic principles and patient management, offering valuable exposure for those considering a career in orthopedic surgery.

What are orthopedic interns?

Orthopedic interns are medical doctors in their first year of residency who are training in the field of orthopedic surgery. They work under the supervision of experienced orthopedic surgeons, assisting with patient care, surgeries, and rounds. Their responsibilities typically include diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries, participating in surgical procedures, and learning about orthopedic treatments and patient management. The internship year helps prepare them for further specialization and advanced responsibilities in orthopedic surgery.

What is the difference between Orthopedic Intern vs Orthopedic Resident?

Title
Rehabilitation Intern (Summer Internship) - Outpatient Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Bronson Outpatient at Turwill, Kalamazoo
Why This Role
If you're passionate about movement, performance, and helping people get back to what they love-this is the internship for you.
At Bronson's Turwill Lane location, you'll gain hands-on exposure to outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation, working alongside clinicians who help patients recover from injuries, improve performance, and safely return to activity. From athletes to active individuals, you'll see how rehab plays a critical role in restoring strength, mobility, and confidence.
Why Now
The earlier you understand movement, injury recovery, and performance-the better prepared you'll be for your future in rehab.
This internship gives you real-world exposure to orthopedic and sports-focused care, helping you connect classroom knowledge to clinical application while building a strong foundation for PT, OT, athletic training, or related fields.
What's In It for You
  • Full-time, structured day shift summer experience
  • Hands-on exposure to orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation
  • Opportunity to work with active individuals and athletic populations
  • Insight into injury recovery, strength progression, and return-to-sport planning
  • Experience supporting Physical and Occupational Therapists in a performance-focused setting
  • Exposure to exercise programming, movement analysis, and patient education
  • Mentorship from clinicians specializing in orthopedics and sports rehab
  • A highly relevant experience for PT, athletic training, and performance careers

What You'll Be Doing
  • Support therapists with non-billable patient care activities in an outpatient ortho/sports setting
  • Assist with therapeutic exercises, stretches, and strengthening activities under supervision
  • Prepare and set up equipment for treatment sessions (bands, weights, tables, etc.)
  • Observe evaluations, movement assessments, and treatment progressions
  • Assist with patient flow, including escorting and preparing patients for sessions
  • Document exercises and interactions in the electronic medical record (as appropriate)
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and high-energy clinical environment
  • Stock and manage therapy equipment and supplies
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and families
  • Assist with administrative support, including scheduling and communication

What You'll Bring
  • Strong interest in orthopedic, sports medicine, or performance-based rehabilitation
  • Enthusiasm for fitness, movement, and helping others return to activity
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Eagerness to learn in a hands-on, active clinical environment
  • Ability to follow direction and support therapist-led care plans
  • Positive, energetic, and team-oriented mindset
  • Reliability and attention to detail

What to Expect
This is a full-time, day shift internship in a high-energy outpatient setting.
You'll be actively engaged throughout the day-supporting therapy sessions, working with patients progressing through rehab, and learning how clinicians guide recovery from injury to full return to activity. Expect a dynamic environment where movement, teamwork, and patient motivation are at the center of everything.
This is an ideal experience for individuals interested in orthopedics, sports rehab, or performance-focused careers.
What Is Required (Education)
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Current enrollment in (or intent to pursue) a healthcare or rehabilitation-related program preferred (e.g., Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Pre-PT, Athletic Training, or similar)

Additional Requirements

  • Comfort using computers and electronic medical records
  • Ability to assist with patient mobility and physical activity tasks
