About the Department/office:
This position deals with patients ranging from pediatrics to trauma to total joint patients as well as a variety of other Orthopaedic conditions. It is a Monday through Friday position with a start time of 7:30am to 4:30pm to include a 30-minute lunch break. The work located is the Ambulatory Surgical Center on the UNC hospital campus.
Summary:
The Orthopaedic Cast Technologist II is a trained member of the Orthopaedic team who works with all associated health care professionals in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities concerning all Orthopaedic procedures.
The Orthopaedic Cast Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and brace support across the entire Orthopaedic clinic and associated surgery center. This role ensures timely, accurate, and safe delivery of braces and related DME to patients and clinical teams, while maintaining efficient inventory control and staff education.
Incentive:
$5,000 Commitment Incentive paid out in 6 installments over 3 years.
Responsibilities:
• This role is for a Durable Medical Equipment Coordinator responsible for performing a variety of duties to ensure the DME program at their clinic site is run efficiently, safely, and profitably
• Fit and educate patients on many different types of orthopedic devices and DME per provider orders, ensuring proper sizing, comfort, and understanding of usage, care, and expected outcomes within manufactures guidelines
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with patients, providers, clinical staff, vendors, and suppliers to ensure seamless and high-quality care delivery
• Review inventory PAR levels and leakage, order stock, and stocking received inventory through third-party DME software (Vision)
• Train and provide oversight to verify products are being applied to patients within manufacturer and safety guidelines
• Work is typically performed in clinical environments such as cast rooms and patient care areas, with adherence to infection control and safety standards
• This role ensures that all prescribed orthopedic devices are properly applied, tracked, and billed in compliance with payer requirements, while also supporting operational efficiency through inventory and audit coordination
• Following up with any patient questions/concerns about DME products and billing issues
• Review products, introduce them to faculty, and follow process to add them to Epic preference list and educate staff
• Support inventory management and audit activities in collaboration with the DME Coordinator, and promptly report equipment issues or shortages to leadership
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of orthopedic and DME services, adapting to evolving patient and departmental needs
• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served

Education Requirements:
• High School diploma or GED
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• BLS required.
• If five (5) years of experience in Orthopaedics: No licensure or certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• If NBCOT Orthopaedic Technologist Certification or equivalent certification (Pedorthist Certification), LPN degree or EMT degree: Two (2) years of experience in Orthopaedics.
• If no NBCOT or equivalent certification (Pedorthist Certification), LPN degree, or EMT degree: Five (5) years of experience in Orthopaedics. Experience must include vital signs and basic terminology commensurate with training programs for nursing assistants, medical assistants and EMTs.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
• Prefer candidates who have ABC or BOC Orthotic Fitter certification or eligibility
