What is an ORSA?

An ORSA (Own Risk and Solvency Assessment) job typically involves assessing and managing financial and operational risks within an insurance or financial organization. Professionals in this role analyze risk exposures, ensure regulatory compliance, and develop strategies to maintain solvency. They work closely with actuarial, risk management, and compliance teams to provide risk assessments and recommendations. ORSA professionals help organizations align risk management with business strategy while meeting regulatory requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an ORSA professional in an insurance company?

As an ORSA professional, your daily responsibilities often include analyzing risk exposure, preparing regulatory reports, and conducting stress tests on the company’s solvency position. You’ll collaborate closely with actuarial, finance, and compliance teams to ensure risk assessments align with both business objectives and regulatory expectations. Additionally, you may be involved in developing and updating risk management policies, presenting findings to senior management, and supporting internal audits or regulatory examinations. The role offers a mix of independent analysis and teamwork, making it both dynamic and impactful within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the ORSA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ORSA (Own Risk and Solvency Assessment) professional, you need a solid background in risk management, insurance, actuarial science, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with risk modeling software, statistical analysis tools, and regulatory reporting systems such as Solvency II or ORSA frameworks is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make candidates stand out by enabling them to explain complex risk concepts across teams. These skills ensure accurate, compliant reporting and facilitate informed decision-making for insurance organizations.
