Organizer In Training Seiu information

What is an organizer in training (OIT) at SEIU?

An Organizer In Training (OIT) at SEIU is an entry-level position designed to teach individuals the skills needed to become a union organizer. OITs work closely with experienced organizers to learn about labor movement strategies, worker outreach, campaign planning, and building relationships with union members. The program typically involves hands-on experience with organizing drives, attending meetings, and participating in workplace actions. The goal is to develop the knowledge and abilities required to advocate for workers’ rights and eventually advance to a full organizer role within SEIU.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an organizer in training (OIT) at SEIU?

To thrive as an Organizer In Training (SEIU), you need strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills, often supported by experience in community organizing or activism. Familiarity with digital organizing tools, databases like VAN, and a valid driver's license are commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, resilience, and the ability to motivate and empower others distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are vital to effectively engage workers, build trust, and drive collective action for labor goals.

What challenges might an organizer in training (OIT) at SEIU face during their initial months on the job?

As an Organizer In Training (OIT) at SEIU, you may encounter challenges such as building trust with workers, learning to communicate effectively across diverse groups, and adapting to a fast-paced, often unpredictable work environment. Early on, OITs often juggle multiple tasks, including canvassing, one-on-one conversations, and supporting organizing campaigns, which requires strong time management and resilience. However, you’ll receive mentorship and hands-on training from experienced organizers, and as you gain confidence, you'll start taking on more responsibility and develop your own leadership style.
