What is optometry?

Optometry is a healthcare profession focused on examining, diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the eyes and visual system. Optometrists are trained to perform eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses, detect eye diseases, and provide certain treatments. They play a crucial role in maintaining eye health and may also offer advice on eye care and vision protection. In many regions, optometrists work closely with ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optometrist?

To thrive as an Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and strong knowledge of eye health, vision correction, and diagnostic techniques. Familiarity with specialized equipment such as phoropters, autorefractors, slit lamps, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly help set top professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate diagnoses, effective treatment plans, and positive patient experiences in a clinical setting.

What are some common challenges optometrists face in managing patient care within a busy practice?

Optometrists often manage a high volume of patients each day, which can make it challenging to provide personalized care while staying on schedule. Balancing administrative responsibilities, such as documenting patient records and managing insurance claims, adds to the workload. Additionally, staying updated with advancements in eye care technology and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations require ongoing professional development. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential for navigating these challenges and ensuring high-quality patient outcomes.

These careers typically require a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree and state licensure.

Hayward, CA โ€ข On-site

Part-time

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

Stratford Eye Care Optometry in Hayward, California, offers an exciting opportunity for an Optometrist who is passionate about helping patients protect and preserve the precious gift of sight. If you're looking for a long-term opportunity to provide full-scope care, build lasting patient relationships, and grow with a supportive private practice, this is a place where your skills, energy, and patient-first approach can make a meaningful impact every day.

Why join us?

Since opening in 2016, Stratford Eye Care Optometry has built a strong reputation in Hayward, California, as a full-scope practice with a loyal patient base and growing specialty services, including myopia control, dry eye care, and specialty contact lenses for corneal ectasia. This is an exciting opportunity to join a close-knit, two-person team as the practice expands its specialty divisions and welcomes an Optometrist who can contribute to continued growth. The practice offers an incredible office culture where the team works hard while in the office, creating the flexibility needed to maintain a healthy work-life balance and enjoy time outside of patient care.

What you'll do:

As an Optometrist at Stratford Eye Care Optometry, you'll provide full-scope eye care following California state law while supporting a patient-centered experience for individuals with a wide range of vision and eye health needs. You'll conduct comprehensive exams, manage follow-up and medical eye visits, and use advanced diagnostic technology-including visual field testing, OCT, fundus photography, and A-scan, to support accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans. This role currently offers two days per week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with potential to grow to three days in the future. The practice typically sees approximately 13 comprehensive exams and five shorter visits per day, offering a steady, engaging schedule in a collaborative environment.

Who you are:

The ideal candidate is an energetic, personable Optometrist who is passionate about full-scope care, building strong patient relationships, and contributing to a positive, collaborative practice culture. Experience in myopia control, dry eye care, and scleral lenses is preferred, though a strong interest and willingness to learn these specialties is also valued. This opportunity is well-suited for someone who communicates with confidence, brings a patient-first mindset to every exam, and is excited to support Stratford Eye Care Optometry's continued growth while delivering exceptional care to the Hayward community.

Why you'll love Hayward:
Located in the heart of the Bay Area, Hayward offers the best of both convenience and community, with easy access to major freeways, public transit, and nearby destinations throughout the East Bay, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley. The city is known for its diverse neighborhoods, welcoming local culture, and strong sense of connection, making it a great place to live, work, and explore. Residents can enjoy more than 3,000 acres of parks and open space, scenic hiking and running trails, the Hayward Regional Shoreline, local dining, community events, and everyday amenities that support a well-rounded lifestyle. Whether spending time outdoors, discovering new restaurants, or enjoying the city's central location, Hayward provides an inviting home base in one of California's most dynamic regions.

You'll enjoy a range of benefits, including:

  • Malpractice insurance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Optometry license in the state of California

Preferred Specialties:

  • Myopia Control, Dry Eye, Scleral Lenses or interested and willing to learn and practice
