The roles in this position will include tasks of an ophthalmic assistant, scribe, patient care coordination and medical record management. In these roles, you can expect first hand clinical exposure to a vast array of ophthalmological conditions and begin to develop an understanding of their medical/surgical management. This direct patient contact will also help to develop appropriate skills for communication in patient education and involvement in the coordination of their care.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Medical scribing
  • Taking patient history
  • Autorefraction
  • Lensometry
  • Visual acuity
  • Intraocular pressure
  • Automated visual fields

Upon completion of working in this capacity, the pre-medical student could expect to have developed a better sense of professionalism in medicine, improved skills in effective communication, a clear understanding of coordination of care and a great appreciation for the patient/physician relationship. From an educational standpoint you should expect to be charged with reading, projects, case discussions/presentations and periodic staff meetings. You will also have the benefit of direct mentorship from the board certified clinicians with whom you will work very closely each day. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for anyone embarking on a medical career.
