Optometric Technician

Vision To Learn seeks compassionate, mission-driven optometric technicians who want to make a tangible impact on children's lives. As part of a mobile clinical team, you'll provide high-quality eye screenings and help deliver glasses to students in underserved communities—removing vision barriers that affect learning and long-term opportunities. Vision To Learn is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization providing vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to K–12 students in underserved communities across the U.S. at no cost to them or their families. Using mobile vision clinics—optometric exam rooms on wheels—we bring essential eye care directly to schools and community centers so every child can see clearly and learn confidently.

Since 2012, Vision To Learn has provided more than 3.6 million vision screenings, 730,000 eye exams, and 600,000 pairs of glasses to children in need across the nation. Our mission is simple: if you can't see, you can't learn.

We are looking for an Optometric Technician like you to join our team with a positive, proactive attitude, and commitment to our mission.

Position Description

Vision To Learn is currently seeking a qualified candidate for a full –time New Jersey Optometric Technician. Work hours are Monday thru Friday with 2-3 Saturdays per year. The Optometric Technician will primarily work during school hours.

Key Position Responsibilities
  • Oversee assigned inside lane eye exams operation.
  • Oversee assigned mobile and/or inside lane eye clinic operation
  • Maintain optimal professional standards
  • Pre-test children before seeing the optometrist
  • Assist patients with frame selections to ensure optimal fit and patient satisfaction
  • Conduct vision screenings using a Welch Allyn Spot Check Vision Screener
  • Complete and prepare daily reports, and meet deadlines
  • Make follow-up calls to patient caregivers for feedback
  • Study and follow Vision To Learn health and safety protocols
  • HIPAA compliance
Clinic Responsibilities
  • Maintain optimal driver safety standards when driving, parking, and using the vehicle
  • Setup the clinic, monitor and replenish inventory, and ensure all patient and administrative paperwork facilitates an efficient workflow each workday
  • Load, secure, inspect and fuel vehicle as necessary
  • Keep vehicle and internal work areas clean and organized at all times
Inside Lane Responsibilities
  • Transport inside lane eye exam equipment in personal vehicle to and from schools and community organizations.
  • Setup and breakdown the inside lane operation, monitor and replenish inventory, and ensure all patient and administrative paperwork facilitates an efficient workflow each workday.
  • Maintain optimal driving when commuting to and from school and community organizations, in particular with inside lane eye exam equipment.
  • Keep the inside lane operation work areas clean and organized at all times.
  • Operate mobile clinic as needed.
Additional Responsibilities As Needed
  • Ability to display exceptional interpersonal skills when interacting with children, site contacts, patient families, and in all internal/external work interactions
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have technical skills
  • Desire to be cross trained to expand your skillset
  • Self-starter who is confident to implement Vision To Learn protocols and embrace a remote setting with limited supervision
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs. and to exert well-paced mobility for an 8-hour shift including standing, walking, bending and squatting
Qualifications
  • Optometric experience preferred
  • Valid driver's license required, with a good driving record and familiarity with greater Newark area geography and with phone GPS; driving transcript must be provided
  • Successful track record of working with children and diverse types of people
  • Must pass company and CMS background checks and drug test
  • Experience using Microsoft Office – Outlook, Excel, Word; Prior optometric EHR/EMR charting experience, and ability to quickly learn project management systems
  • Bilingual English/Spanish written/verbal communication skills a plus
