What is an optomechanical engineer?

An Optomechanical Engineer designs, analyzes, and develops systems that integrate optical and mechanical components. They work on precision alignment, thermal stability, and structural integrity to ensure optimal performance of optical devices such as telescopes, cameras, and laser systems. Their role involves using engineering software for simulations, prototyping, and testing to refine designs. They collaborate with optical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to create reliable, high-performance optical systems for industries like aerospace, defense, and biomedical applications.

What are some typical projects or challenges an optomechanical engineer might encounter on the job?

Optomechanical Engineers often work on designing and integrating components for systems such as lasers, telescopes, cameras, and precision measurement devices. Common challenges include achieving tight tolerances for optical alignment, minimizing mechanical vibrations, and ensuring environmental stability of sensitive components. Projects may require close collaboration with optical engineers, electrical engineers, and manufacturing teams to iterate designs and optimize performance. This role offers opportunities to work on cutting-edge technologies and tackle complex problems, making each day varied and intellectually stimulating.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optomechanical engineer, and why are they important?

Optomechanical Engineers require a solid background in mechanical engineering, optics, and precision design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, optical simulation tools like Zemax, and hands-on experience with prototyping and testing equipment is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively are crucial soft skills for this role. These qualifications enable engineers to create reliable, high-performance optomechanical systems that meet rigorous specifications and project deadlines.

Job description

Activ Surgical is building a platform for introducing the latest sensing technology to minimally invasive surgery, intended to visualize the invisible to facilitate better surgical decisions and outcomes. As part of the R&D team, you will be responsible for prototyping and designing novel mechanical systems and enclosures for real-time minimally invasive medical imaging and sensing devices, taking concepts from early prototypes through to commercial-grade, manufacturable products. You will be expected to bring a creative, detail-oriented, and dedicated approach to solving complex mechanical design challenges, stay current on the most pressing clinical and manufacturing constraints, and effectively communicate your designs with the broader cross-functional team.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Hands-on experience designing mechanical systems, enclosures, or housings for electro-optical or medical devices
  • Experience taking designs from concept through rapid prototyping to commercial-grade, manufacturable products
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks or equivalent) for 3D modeling, tolerancing, and drawing generation
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and rapidly prototype novel mechanical solutions using techniques such as 3D printing, machining, and sheet metal fabrication
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, DFM/DFA principles, and materials selection
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate closely with a cross-functional team (electrical, optical, software, and clinical stakeholders)
  • Full-remote is not acceptable for this position. Regular presence and collaboration with the team in the office is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing mechanical systems for medical devices, including familiarity with regulatory and design-control requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485)
  • Experience with precision optomechanical assemblies or camera/sensor housing
  • Background in thermal management, sealing/ingress protection, or sterilization-compatible design
  • Experience supporting design verification and validation (V&V) testing
  • Familiarity with supply chain and vendor management for prototype and production builds

Benefits

  • Fortune 500 Health & Wellness Benefits
  • 401(k)
