What does an option trader do?

An option trader is a financial professional who buys and sells options contracts on various assets, such as stocks, commodities, or currencies, in order to profit from price movements. They analyze market trends, assess risk, and use different trading strategies to maximize returns while managing potential losses. Option traders can work independently, for investment firms, or as part of a larger trading desk, and their job often involves quick decision-making and a strong understanding of financial markets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an option trader?

To thrive as an Option Trader, you need strong quantitative analysis skills, a solid understanding of financial markets, and typically a degree in finance, mathematics, or a related field. Proficiency with trading platforms like Bloomberg Terminal, risk management software, and certifications such as FINRA Series 7 or CFA are often required. Exceptional decision-making, stress management, and clear communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to making informed, timely trades and managing risk effectively in a highly dynamic and competitive environment.

What are some common challenges option traders face when managing their risk exposure?

Option Traders often encounter challenges in accurately assessing and managing risk due to the complex and dynamic nature of options markets. Market volatility, sudden economic events, and liquidity constraints can quickly impact the value of positions. Successful traders use a combination of quantitative models, hedging strategies, and real-time market analysis to mitigate these risks while maintaining profitability. Collaboration with other traders and risk managers is crucial to ensure a well-balanced portfolio and minimize unexpected losses.

How much do option traders earn?

Option traders' earnings vary widely based on experience, skill, and trading success. Salaries can range from a few thousand dollars per month for beginners to six-figure incomes for experienced traders who consistently generate profits, often supplemented by commissions and bonuses. Many traders also operate independently or work for financial firms, where compensation structures differ.

How to get a job in options trading?

To get a job as an options trader, candidates typically need a strong understanding of financial markets, options strategies, and risk management, often demonstrated through relevant education such as finance or economics degrees. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level trading roles and obtaining certifications like the Series 7 or Series 63 can improve prospects. Proficiency with trading platforms and analytical tools is also important in this field.

Is option trading a good career?

Option trading as a career involves analyzing financial markets, managing risk, and making strategic trades using options contracts. It requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of market behavior, and often a certification or background in finance. Success depends on market conditions, experience, and risk management abilities.

Job description

About Public
Public is building the Agentic Brokerage. Focused on serious investors who use AI and a vast variety of asset classes, from stocks and bonds to crypto and options, to build their portfolios. Launched in 2019, Public has been trusted with billions of assets from retail investors.
What you'll do:
You'll own the acquisition, advocacy, and retention of high-volume options traders at Public by working across every function and leveraging every asset we have to bring them onto the platform. That means building and maintaining a pipeline of high-potential prospects from both Public-generated and outbound channels, and, where useful, identifying and working with external partners to hit your goals. Options volume is your north star: you'll figure out where sophisticated flow lives, meet traders where they are, and do whatever it takes (within regulatory limits) to bring that volume to Public.
Public is the Agentic Brokerage, and options traders are among the most sophisticated users of our platform. You'll be the connective tissue between our product and the trader community by evangelizing our AI Agents, API access, and options tooling to the traders who'll push them hardest, then channeling what you hear back to product and engineering. You'll need to know our API and agentic capabilities well enough to demo them credibly and win over traders who build their own systems.
This is a role for someone who works well independently and enjoys owning their approach. You'll have real autonomy and a clear target, with the flexibility to figure out the path that works best.
What we're looking for:
  • 5+ years experience working in a premier consumer finance and/or capital markets organization
  • Series 7, Series 4 and/or 63/66 (or immediate path to completing)
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in options trading: single-leg and multi-leg strategies, spreads, volatility, and the mechanics of how serious options traders actually operate
  • Track record of sales and/or direct customer acquisition success
  • Experience working within regulatory compliance constraints to deliver business outcomes
  • Ability to build processes and approaches for acquiring clients from a blank slate
  • Creative problem solver on behalf of company and clients
  • Ability to represent the firm and speak publicly, including in options-trader communities
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Active Public member and options trader (sign up today!)

Bonus Points:
  • Deep understanding of all tools and asset classes in an active trader's arsenal, with options as your specialty
  • Existing relationships or credibility within options-trading communities (Discord, X/FinTwit, Reddit, trading meetups, etc.)
  • Experience working with or selling to API-based and high-frequency options traders
  • Equity capital markets, trading, and/or research experience
  • Experience with markets and financial data (e.g., exchange data, options chains, fundamental data)
  • Ability to use modern AI tools to scale your productivity and impact
  • Fluency with data (and interest in learning) SQL and/or Python programming languages

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Uncapped bonus structure based on sales performance
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans
  • Generous PTO and parental leave policy
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Opportunities for career growth and professional development
