What is an optics internship?

An optics internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of optics, which involves the study and application of light and its properties. Interns typically work in research labs, manufacturing settings, or engineering teams, assisting with projects related to lasers, lenses, fiber optics, and optical instruments. These internships help participants develop practical skills, expand their professional network, and explore potential career paths in optics or photonics.

What types of projects and hands-on experiences can I expect during an optics internship?

During an Optics Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as designing and testing optical systems, assembling laboratory experiments, and analyzing optical data. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers and scientists, gaining exposure to industry-standard equipment and software. You may also assist in troubleshooting experimental setups or participate in research on topics like laser optics, fiber optics, or imaging systems. These experiences provide valuable practical skills and insights into the field, preparing you for future roles in optics or photonics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optics intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optics Intern, you need a foundation in physics or engineering, with coursework or experience in optics and photonics. Familiarity with optical design software (like Zemax or LightTools), laboratory equipment, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative research and technical reporting. These competencies ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to technical challenges, and communicate findings clearly within the team.

Job description

Turn Your Technical Background Into a High-Growth Sales Career

Telence Solutions is a fast-growing consulting firm delivering professional services across the full networking and security landscape — Nokia, Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, Arista, Versa, Palo Alto Networks, and full optical solutions. We're built by industry veterans, including leadership with 20 years running a major carrier-grade services organization, and we're now investing directly in the next generation of technical sales talent in the US West region.

This isn't a typical entry-level sales job. It's a structured, hands-on development program for people who already understand networking equipment and are ready to build a career translating that knowledge into deals, relationships, and revenue. You'll be trained personally, mentored closely, and given real ownership as you grow — with earning potential that scales far beyond a traditional entry-level role.

What You'll Do

●      Learn the full sales cycle — prospecting, technical positioning, quoting, and closing — directly from senior sales leadership

●      Represent a multi-vendor portfolio (Nokia, Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, Arista, Versa, Palo Alto, optical) to enterprise and carrier customers

●      Bridge the gap between technical credibility and commercial conversations, using your field background to build trust with customers from day one

●      Progress toward increasing account ownership and deal responsibility as you demonstrate results

What We're Looking For

●      Education: A bachelor's degree in a technical field — Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, IT, or similar — completed within the last 10 years

●      Certifications: At least one relevant credential such as CCNA, Nokia NRS-1, JNCIA, or an equivalent associate-level networking certification

●      Field Experience: Hands-on experience installing, configuring, or supporting networking equipment — internships and junior field roles count

●      Communication: Strong written and spoken English; comfortable presenting to and building rapport with customers

●      Drive: Genuine motivation to build a long-term career in technical sales — coachable, competitive, and hungry to grow

●      Location: Based in (or willing to relocate to) the US West region

Compensation & Growth

We designed this program for people who want to bet on themselves:

●      Base: $50,000/year

●      Commission: Uncapped, aggressive variable commission structure — top performers significantly outearn traditional sales base salaries within their first year or two

●      Equity: Potential for company equity as you hit growth milestones, with meaningful upside given our trajectory since inception

●      Mentorship: Direct, hands-on coaching from leadership with two decades of carrier and enterprise sales experience

●      Career path: A clear track toward Account Executive / Sales Director as you prove yourself

If you're early in your career, technically credible, and ready to trade a leaner base for real mentorship and real upside — we want to hear from you.

Telence Solutions is an equal opportunity employer.
