Optical Simulation Engineer information

What is an Optical Simulation Engineer?

An Optical Simulation Engineer is a professional who uses specialized software and modeling techniques to design, analyze, and optimize optical systems such as lenses, lasers, and imaging devices. They simulate the behavior of light within these systems to predict performance and identify potential issues before physical prototypes are built. These engineers work closely with product development teams in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics. Their expertise helps to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure the quality of optical products.

What are the main challenges an Optical Simulation Engineer faces when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Optical Simulation Engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to ensure that optical designs integrate seamlessly into larger systems. A common challenge is translating complex optical requirements into terms that colleagues from other disciplines can understand, while also adapting simulations to reflect real-world constraints such as tolerances and material properties. Effective communication and flexibility are essential, as project requirements can evolve rapidly and may require iterative simulations or adjustments. Building strong cross-functional relationships can help overcome these challenges and lead to more robust, innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Optical Simulation Engineer vs Optical Design Engineer?

AspectOptical Simulation EngineerOptical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in optics, physics, or engineering; proficiency in simulation softwareBachelor's or Master's in optics, physics, or engineering; strong design and analytical skills
Work EnvironmentPrimarily uses simulation tools to model optical systems; collaborates with design teamsDesigns and develops optical components and systems; often involved in prototyping
Employer & Industry UsageOptics companies, research labs, aerospace, and defenseOptics and photonics companies, consumer electronics, and medical device industries

Both roles require a background in optics and engineering, but Optical Simulation Engineers focus on modeling and analysis using simulation software, while Optical Design Engineers are more involved in creating and optimizing physical optical systems. They often work together but have distinct responsibilities within the optical development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Optical Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optical Simulation Engineer, you need expertise in optics, physics, and mathematics, typically with a degree in optical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in simulation software such as Zemax, LightTools, or COMSOL Multiphysics, along with familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and conveying complex technical concepts. These abilities ensure accurate optical system modeling, efficient project workflows, and successful development of innovative optical products.

The Opportunity:
CACI is looking for a Systems Engineer to join our Optics and Photonics Solutions (OPS) division! Our laser communications technology is helping NASA provide high-definition video from the International Space Station, and to explore asteroids 250 million miles away. Our other optical technology can also help scientists discover biohazards; support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and protect soldiers from explosive devices. Do you have a passion for innovation? Apply now and join the team!
Location: Florham Park, NJ
Responsibilities:
  • Be part of the systems engineering team on programs that develop new photonic technology and custom hardware for free-space optical communications, laser transmitters for remote sensing, RF photonics, and other applications
  • Lead the development of new and innovative optical designs for free-space laser communications systems through optical simulation, theoretical analysis, and bench-top setup and characterization.
  • Develop control systems for optical terminals
  • Develop models in Zemax to optimize optical designs for a variety of applications including laser communications.
  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to derive physical, software and electronics requirements from customer requirements. Flow down requirements to any/all subsystems as required.
  • Work closely with inter-disciplinary teams to validate expected system level performance and provide solutions for improvements.
  • Interact directly with contract manufacturers to translate the optical design to a product build and define test plans.
  • Document requirements at the systems and subsystems levels, for hardware and software, and update as needed.
  • Support program execution activities including but not limited to:
  • Interact with Government customers, during formal program reviews and throughout the program lifecycle, to negotiate requirements, present detailed technical status updates, and to identify new business opportunities.
  • Supervise and direct the work of both technicians and junior engineers in the development, modeling, and testing of systems
  • Work closely with the hardware fabrication team to develop appropriate build and test procedures
  • Develop accurate estimates of resources and task intervals for program managers, and track and meet schedule milestones and cost objectives. Contribute to the growth of OPS by creation of new ideas for the technical growth, championing our technology in personal interactions with customers, and proposal creation.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Master's Degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Demonstrated lab experience with bench-top free-space optical system setup and alignment
  • Strong technical background in free-space optics, physical and geometric optics including optical beam propagation
  • Control systems engineering
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Demonstrated experience in test procedure generation and technical writing skills for test documents management
  • Strong skills in instrumentation automation, data analysis and system simulations using MATLAB, Python, C, and/or LabVIEW)
  • Must be willing to obtain a security clearance

Desired:
  • PhD preferred
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and MBSE software including Cameo, or DOORS.
  • Expertise in optical design software packages such as Zemax and ability to create custom simulations/models for new applications
  • Active Secret or Top-Secret clearance
