The Telecommunications Mechanic II (Network Installer) is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and supporting telecommunications and network infrastructure in a hands-on technical environment. This role combines network installation, server and equipment deployment, cable and fiber work, troubleshooting, and documentation support for customer sites and lab environments. The position supports the setup and sustainment of communications systems by working with switches, routers, servers, transmission equipment, wiring, and related components. Candidates should be comfortable working independently or alongside lead installers and management, following technical drawings and customer requirements, and supporting projects that may require up to 50% travel, including both CONUS and OCONUS location.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
What you'll be doing
- Install, maintain, and repair telecommunications and network infrastructure, including damaged or malfunctioning network equipment, wiring circuits, and related electronic communications hardware.
- Fabricate, terminate, install, and troubleshoot twisted pair, Cat5/6, and fiber optic cabling, including cable tracing, BNC connection terminations, dressing cable, and wire management.
- Set up, integrate, test, and evaluate network and server equipment such as switches, routers, transmission equipment, and related communications devices.
- Perform initial server configurations such as ILO/iDRAC setup, NIC card swaps, server installations, and removal of decommissioned or failed equipment for shipment preparation.
- Assist with physical infrastructure installation, including mounting, leveling, aligning, and securing equipment bays, racks, and cabinets as part of network deployment activities.
- Use diagnostic and test equipment such as digital multimeters, signal generators, semiconductor testers, curve tracers, and oscilloscopes to verify system functionality and support troubleshooting.
- Support customer lab operations by identifying and resolving lab and network issues as requested by management, helping maintain operational readiness and system performance.
- Create and maintain technical documentation including weekly activity reports, technical records, system performance logs, maintenance documentation, master parts lists, and rack elevation drawings for installations.
Minimum Requirements
What we're looking for
- Strong hands-on technical ability in network installation, equipment maintenance, server deployment, and structured cabling work across telecommunications environments.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow office drawings, schematics, product documentation, technical requirements, and test bed or cabling running lists with accuracy.
- Working knowledge of network devices and server hardware, including experience with platforms and manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Arista, Cisco, and Juniper.
- Comfort working with both AC and DC power applications, including installation support and practical understanding of power connections in equipment environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose equipment, cabling, fiber, and lab-related issues efficiently.
- Ability to work with little to no supervision, follow direction from lab management and lead installers, and stay productive in fast-paced technical settings.
- Solid organizational and documentation skills, including the ability to keep records current, provide status updates, and support reporting requirements.
- Physical capability to perform installation duties, including the ability to lift up to 75 lbs or more and work in active equipment or lab spaces.
What you'll need

- One of the following education and experience combinations is required:
- Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of experience
- Associate degree with 7+ years of experience
- 9+ years of experience in lieu of a degree
- Additional experience noted for the role includes 3-5 years of related experience in equipment, cable, and fibering installations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams, with the ability to create, read, and update spreadsheets and databases.
- Ability to read schematics using Visio and/or CAD.
- Experience with multimode and singlemode fiber tracing and troubleshooting.
- Preferred qualifications include the ability to maintain inventory records, understand lab layouts, and familiarity with UPS and CRACs.
What we offer
- Full benefits.
- 401(k).
- Opportunity to work on hands-on network, telecommunications, and server installation projects in support of customer and DoD-related environments.
- Exposure to a broad range of technologies, including servers, switches, routers, fiber infrastructure, transmission equipment, and power applications.
- A role that offers varied work environments through both site-based and lab-related support responsibilities.
