Position Overview

The Project Manager for Fiber Optics provides project leadership for large-scale projects with emphasis on aerial and underground telecommunication construction throughout the US. This position is accountable for all aspects of a project’s success, from the initial planning stages to the execution and completion of a project while exceeding our customers’ expectations. The Project Manager for Fiber Optics ensures projects are constructed in accordance with design, budget, scope of work and schedule throughout the project cycle; effectively planning and anticipating potential issues and project schedules to accomplish company and client objectives. This position ensures all aspects of the assigned project are accomplished according to our core tenets of safety, quality, and image, and providing an excellent customer experience while maintaining compliance with established project plans, efficiency, and cost management. The Project Manager for Fiber Optics is responsible for the organization, implementation, and scheduling of the labor/crews for the construction of the project. This position collaborates with upper management in the planning, monitoring, and execution of the project.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the deployment, execution and closeout of a variety of telecommunication fiber infrastructure projects in rural, residential, and metropolitan areas
  • Oversee construction teams, coordinating their daily workflows and ensuring quality metrics and adherence to established processes and contractual obligations are maintained
  • Effectively lead in-house employees and subcontractors with clear expectations and goals
  • Manage the project budget, milestones, timelines, scope of work (SOW) definition, innovation, communication, resources, risks, customer satisfaction, vehicle maintenance, and life cycle of the project with careful attention to profit, loss, and timelines/deadlines
  • Using project metrics and trends accurately and consistently forecast future production, costs, timelines, and potential obstacles of the project
  • Identify and develop cost savings measures that increase profitability and reduce, eliminate, or compensate for potential project losses. These measures must be consistent with our Core Values and mission and must not diminish our standards of performance or the quality of our work
  • Consistently and accurately report project metrics including production, financials, and timeline to the Director of Operations, COO, and Executive Team providing project and client insights with a solutions orientation and can-do attitude
  • Track, review, and approve in-house and subcontractor daily production reports, create and manage progressive project documentation
  • Maintain high-level relationships with the client, meeting as appropriate to review project scope, and status, and to ensure positive communication is maintained
  • Sufficiently meet contract agreements, monitoring scope of work, change orders, and material procurement needs
  • Review and provide input into project plans with Project and Engineering Managers
  • Utilizes safety and security knowledge including relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of our clients, their customers, data, property, and institutions
  • Maintain professional and collegial relationships with customers, city officials, jurisdictional authorities, and utility representatives
  • Oversee the orienting of new hires, performance evaluations, and coaching of team members, ensuring they are fully trained and equipped to deliver projects to the established standards and within the expectations of our clients
  • Support a positive culture where core values are the foundation of how clients, employees, vendors, and subcontractors all work together in the attainment of client and business goals
  • Ensure the interior and exterior of company property, vehicles, and equipment, are cleaned and maintained communicating any performance or maintenance issues to the Fleet Director or coordinating services to remedy as appropriate
  • Resolve customer concerns and complaints as needed
  • Other projects or duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Minimum of (5) years in the telecommunications industry with outside plan construction, fiber optics, telecommunications architectures, optical transport equipment, and project management experience
  • At least (3) years of experience of large-scale project management, and/or engineering along with a proven track record of construction management, project performance, and project profitability from award to project completion
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or related field preferred
  • Previous experience in aerial, underground, and splicing best practices including micro trench, HDD, missile, and fusion splicing; working knowledge of inside and outside plant fiber optic network infrastructure, engineering design and construction
  • Advanced knowledge of public right of way and ISP/OSP Fiber Optic Plant deployments to include maintenance of traffic (MOT)
  • Ability to engage with the customer/client and establish a positive working relationship; ability to listen to customer needs and propose solutions to help resolve their issues
  • Experience in scheduling projects, cost engineering, budgeting, forecasting costs, status reports, procurement, and negotiation with subcontractors and material vendors required
  • Management experience in driving in-house crews and subcontractor performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction/engineering drawings, records, route maps, scopes of work, testing/QC, and auditing projects for compliance to SOW and contractual obligations
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Google Workspace, DWG drawings, and Project Management applications; Strong network and electronics skills and knowledge; ability to work on a tablet
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required; ability to clearly, professionally, and effectively communicate and interpret technical information
  • Positive, solutions-oriented attitude with strong analytical and innovative problem-solving skills; ability to organize and prioritize tasks to completion in a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail
  • Ability to explain and train complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under the vehicle liability policy; is expected to drive as required to assigned projects to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery
  • ‘Safety First’ attitude and strict adherence to safety procedures
  • The selection process includes a comprehensive background investigation
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing
  • Ability to work after hours, some weekends, and evenings as needed to meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to travel as needed to perform duties of the position
