Optical Application Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optical application engineer?

To thrive as an Optical Application Engineer, you need a strong background in optics, photonics, and physics, typically supported by a degree in optical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with optical design software (such as Zemax or Code V), laser systems, and relevant industry standards is essential. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you translate customer requirements into practical solutions and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering innovative optical solutions that meet technical specifications and client needs.

What is an optical application engineer?

An Optical Application Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, developing, and supporting optical systems and components, such as lenses, lasers, and fiber optics, for various applications. They work closely with clients to understand technical requirements and provide solutions that meet specific optical performance needs. Their responsibilities often include testing prototypes, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with engineering and sales teams to ensure successful product integration. Optical Application Engineers play a crucial role in industries such as telecommunications, medical devices, imaging, and manufacturing.

How does an optical application engineer typically collaborate with product development teams to deliver client solutions?

Optical Application Engineers often work closely with product development teams by translating client requirements into technical specifications, participating in design reviews, and troubleshooting integration challenges. Job description

Description

- 1+ years as a data center technician - Strong understanding of Network principles and OSI Model - Helping with patching - Fiber optics/copper troubleshooting, and experience working with cut sheets - Experience working with external vendors - Strong organization and communication skills - Ideally, Network+ or obtaining CCNA Top 3 Must Have Hard Skills (Top 3 ranked in importance) 1. Project or Work Order Management — The ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, track status, update documentation, and hit deadlines in a structured system. Could come from construction management, telecom, IT project coordination, or similar fields. The tool doesn't matter as much as the discipline. 2. Technical Documentation and Data Accuracy — Experience reading and producing technical documents such as network diagrams, engineering drawings, floor plans, or bill of materials. Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation is critical since planners are the source of truth for vendors and downstream teams. 3. Data Center or Telecom Background — Familiarity with data center infrastructure, network cabling, or telecommunications environments. They don't need to be an expert but prior exposure to the physical layer of networking reduces the learning curve on terminology, documentation, and process. Nice to haves (Top 3 ranked in importance) 1. Project Management Experience — Formal or informal experience managing projects from intake to completion, including tracking milestones, managing dependencies, and communicating status to stakeholders. Not required but accelerates ramp time significantly. 2. Relevant Degrees or Certifications — A degree in information technology, network engineering, project management, or a related field is a plus. Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or PMP signal foundational technical knowledge and a commitment to the field. Neither is required but both indicate a candidate who has invested in building relevant knowledge outside of on the job experience. 3. Process Improvement Mindset — Experience identifying inefficiencies and proposing or implementing process changes. Planners who think upstream and look for ways to reduce rework and improve handoffs add value beyond just executing tasks. This is hard to screen for on a resume but shows up quickly in behavioral interview questions. We are looking to hire a highly motivated, best-in-class Network Technician to join our team within network infrastructure deployment on a temporary basis. The candidate will work with minimum supervision in a dynamic environment to drive the expansion of our next-generation networks. The position responsibilities will include scaling support of several data center locations and be responsible for day to day assistance with capacity management. The Network Technician will work closely with both internal customers and external vendors to facilitate smooth project execution as directed by Technical Program Managers. Our ideal candidate is highly autonomous, very detail oriented, possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and has significant experience of supporting large scale, enterprise class networks. Excellent network implementation and troubleshooting skills combined with a proven documentation methodology is also required. Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact efficiently with peers and customers are required. The desire and ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment is essential.Responsibilities: - Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.- Work closely with our Network Engineering & Network Technical Project Manager teams to ensure fast, smooth rollout of new designs and products.- TCP/IP networking knowledge- Broad understanding of infrastructure technologies- Knowledge of network cabling and standard optic types.- Familiarity with common networking terms.- Manage work and priorities through ticketing system and workflow- Collaborate with various stake holders to remove project obstacles- Travel within the Virginia region will be required.- Troubleshoot networking, routing and interconnectivity issues, including troubleshooting of network device configuration and low level application interaction- Complete customer requests via Remedy trouble ticketing system- Participate in the migration, basic configuration and rollout of new or upgraded hardwareQualifications- 0-2 years of relevant experience. - Excellent analytical skills.- Ethernet and IP networking knowledge and experience in the application of IP protocols.- Substantial background in large scale datacenter network implementations and support.- Experience working in virtualized enterprise networking environmentsOther Qualifications & Responsibilities- Experience dealing with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.- Effective prioritization and time management.Physical requirements- The ability to sit in front of computer for entire scheduled 8-hour shift with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.- Ability to move and lift computer equipment up to 35lbs
