To thrive as an Optometrist (Opt), you need a Doctor of Optometry degree, state licensure, and a thorough understanding of vision science and ocular health. Familiarity with diagnostic instruments such as phoropters, autorefractors, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential for evaluating and documenting patient care. The role typically involves a balance of direct patient care and administrative work, such as updating medical records and managing follow-up appointments. Collaboration with opticians and other support staff is common to ensure patients receive complete and coordinated care.
