Operators Assistant information

What is an operators assistant?

An Operator's Assistant is a support role that works alongside machine or equipment operators in industries such as manufacturing, oil and gas, or utilities. Their main responsibilities include preparing equipment, assisting with setup and maintenance, monitoring operations, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. They may also help troubleshoot problems, record data, and perform routine cleaning or minor repairs. This role is often an entry-level position, providing hands-on training and experience for those interested in advancing to operator roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operators assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operators Assistant, you need a basic understanding of machinery operations, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industry-specific equipment, maintenance tools, and computerized control systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help Operators Assistants excel in supporting operations and ensuring smooth workflow. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable production processes.

What are some common challenges faced by an operators assistant, and how can they be addressed?

Operators Assistants often work in fast-paced environments where multitasking and attention to detail are crucial. One common challenge is adapting to rapidly changing priorities, especially during equipment malfunctions or production delays. Effective communication with the lead operator and other team members is essential to stay updated on tasks and safety protocols. Building a strong understanding of the machinery and process flow can help anticipate potential issues and contribute more proactively to the team's goals.

What is the difference between Operators Assistant vs Equipment Operator?

AspectOperators AssistantEquipment Operator
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma, certification or license often preferred
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, industrial plants, oil fieldsConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, mining sites
Job ResponsibilitiesAssist with equipment setup, maintenance, and safety checksOperate heavy machinery like bulldozers, cranes, or excavators

Operators Assistants support equipment operators by handling auxiliary tasks, while Equipment Operators directly control heavy machinery. Both roles require safety awareness and industry-specific knowledge, but Equipment Operators typically need more technical skills and certifications. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right position in industrial and construction settings.

What does an operators assistant get paid?

Operators assistants typically earn an hourly wage that ranges from $15 to $25, depending on experience, location, and industry. Some positions may also include benefits such as health insurance and paid time off, and the role often requires safety training and familiarity with operational tools.

Job description

Ready to turn your manufacturing experience and mechanical ability into a skilled technical career? Piller Aimmco is looking for a reliable, dependable Set-Up Technician to support our injection molding operations in Washougal, Washington.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with machinery, solving problems, and learning how manufacturing processes come together. You will receive hands-on training in mold setup, machine operation, automation equipment, and process troubleshooting—with the opportunity to develop toward a future Process Technician role.

Because this position plays an important role in keeping production running, consistent attendance, punctuality, and dependability are essential.

What You’ll Do
  • Perform mold setups and teardowns, including installation, alignment, and removal
  • Purge and prepare molding machines for material and job changes
  • Set up end-of-arm tooling and related automation equipment
  • Verify materials, tooling, and process instructions before starting each job
  • Operate molding machines during setup and inspect first-off parts
  • Prepare safe, organized, and efficient workstations for production operators
  • Assist operators during job transitions and clearly communicate setup requirements
  • Troubleshoot setup-related issues and work with team members to keep production moving
  • Follow company safety procedures and applicable OSHA/WISHA requirements
  • Support Lean, 5S, and continuous improvement efforts
What We’re Looking For
  • At least one year of experience in production, manufacturing, or a related mechanical role
  • A demonstrated record of reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Dependability and the ability to report to work consistently as scheduled
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn
  • Practical problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a production team
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane; training and certification will be provided if needed

Experience with injection molding machines, mold setup, auxiliary equipment, troubleshooting, Lean manufacturing, or 5S is helpful—but not required. We are willing to train someone who brings the right mechanical ability, dependability, work ethic, and desire to grow.

If you are ready to build valuable technical skills and take the next step toward a career in injection molding, we encourage you to apply.
