Data Scientist - Optimization/Operations Research Engineer (Boston Area, Full-Time, Salary) Who We Are

AlphaRoute is a startup that provides dynamic, end-to-end software, advanced analytics, and sophisticated consulting support to help school bus and transit agencies optimize their daily operations. Our work has been recognized by INFORMS, the largest professional association for operations research, management science, and analytics. Our team of PhD-level researchers and former public sector executives has garnered significant press coverage from The Wall Street Journal and several other publications. As we work to transform the world of mobility, we are saving millions of dollars for our clients, improving the lives of their constituents, and helping the environment. We are a division of Dynamic Ideas, LLC, a company with a 26-year history of incubating and monetizing several successful enterprises across a range of industries. Dynamic Ideas is led by Professor Dimitris Bertsimas, an MIT dean, serial entrepreneur, and one of the foremost thought leaders in optimization and operations research. We are supported by a well-established and highly successful Board of Directors. Dynamic Ideas does business internationally and has multiple overseas software development teams, which AlphaRoute leverages to great success. AlphaRoute is based in Waltham, MA and is looking for energetic, solutions-oriented people to drive our next wave of innovation and to promote our relentless pursuit of customer success.

The Role in Brief

Data Scientists play a crucial role in AlphaRoute’s fast-paced growth and development. They leverage cutting edge problem solving, mathematical, and programming skills to satisfy a wide spectrum of project objectives, often with a goal of optimizing our clients’ vehicle routing and other operational solutions. They analyze complex datasets, design mathematical optimization formulations, and implement and test code in a production setting. Serving as the Research & Development unit of a rapidly scaling startup, they develop game-changing solutions and new innovations that continue to fuel AlphaRoute’s success.

More broadly, the Data Scientist position also helps to drive the growth of Dynamic Ideas’ other workstreams, exposing the individuals in this role to a range of complex problems across industries. This multi-industry approach, coupled with a vibrant startup atmosphere and an emphasis on professional development, helps to ensure that the people in this role will grow quickly in their careers and find the work fresh and stimulating.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Coursework or practical experience designing and implementing linear and mixed-integer optimization formulations for custom use cases.
  • Prior experience writing efficient, organized, object-oriented code, preferably in a team-based work setting.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other data scientists and others across the organization.
  • A demonstrated openness to sharing and receiving feedback on code and other work products.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, evidenced by prior work and/or research.
  • An energetic, team-oriented professional who is passionate about innovation and data science.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior research or work experience in the transportation industry.
  • Proficiency in coding with Python. Experience with Julia is a plus.
  • Familiarity with optimization methods and commercial and open-source solvers (e.g., CPLEX, Gurobi).
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning problems such as forecasting, clustering etc.
  • Experience with version control (Git).
  • Passion for work that benefits the public good.
Compensation

The role will feature a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package, including fully employer-paid medical and dental insurance, a Health Savings Account (HSA), flexible work scheduling, Work-from-Home Fridays, and a 401k plan.
