What is an operations manager project manager?

Operations Manager Project Managers are professionals who oversee both the operational aspects and project management functions within an organization. Their role combines ensuring daily business operations run smoothly with planning, executing, and closing specific projects. They coordinate teams, manage resources, set timelines and budgets, and work to achieve organizational goals efficiently. These managers act as a bridge between upper management and project teams, ensuring strategic objectives are met while maintaining operational excellence.

How does an operations manager project manager balance strategic oversight with hands-on project execution?

Operations Manager Project Managers are often required to juggle both high-level strategy and day-to-day project management. This dual responsibility means regularly aligning project objectives with organizational goals while also staying closely involved in timelines, budgets, and team coordination. Success in this role often depends on strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to delegate effectively. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as finance, HR, and technical departments—is common, ensuring that operations run smoothly while projects are delivered on time. Over time, professionals in this role can advance to senior leadership positions by demonstrating their ability to drive both operational excellence and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operations manager project manager?

To thrive as an Operations Manager Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, process optimization, and operational strategy, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as Asana, Trello, or MS Project), ERP systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma is highly valuable. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you motivate teams and manage cross-functional initiatives. These abilities ensure projects are delivered efficiently, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

Job description

About this position

About L. L. Blue Engineering

L.L. Blue Engineering was built on more than 25 years of experience planning, securing, and integrating industrial control system projects. Our work supports the safe and reliable operation of industrial facilities by helping owners modernize and maintain their systems as technology evolves.

As a team, we focus on understanding client needs, addressing operational priorities, and delivering practical engineering solutions that support long‑term performance and reliability.

Listening to our customers, applying sound engineering solutions, and executing work consistently and responsibly are core expectations at L.L. Blue Engineering.

Purpose

Own project delivery execution and build the operational infrastructure — SOPs, workflows, and repeatable processes — that enables L.L. Blue Engineering to scale reliably without the Managing Principal serving as the delivery bottleneck. This role is central to L.L. Blue Engineering's strategic direction: we are actively building an agent-first project management infrastructure, and this person is its strategic architect and implementation driver. Working under the technical direction of the Managing Principal, the PM defines what the agent-first PMO needs to accomplish across the full delivery lifecycle, drives its implementation, and validates that it is producing measurable improvements in delivery outcomes. The Project Controls Coordinator owns daily operational execution and workflow refinement — the PM owns the strategic architecture that makes the whole system work.

Position Summary Project Delivery
  • Own project execution from kickoff through closeout across engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance scopes
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, milestones, and deliverable tracking across all active engagements
  • Serve as the primary coordination layer between engineering teams, field technicians, subcontractors, and clients
  • Identify and escalate scope, schedule, and risk issues proactively — before they reach the Managing Principal
  • Lead project kickoff, status, and closeout meetings; maintain clear action registers and decision logs
  • Coordinate proposal and estimating activities for new opportunities, including scope clarification, work package structuring, and schedule development
  • Work alongside the Managing Principal and technical leads to translate scope into executable work packages with realistic labor, material, and timeline assumption
  • Oversee proposal assembly and submission logistics in coordination with the Project Controls Coordinator
  • Maintain proposal templates, bid logs, and opportunity tracking systems
Agent First PMO - Strategic Architecture & Implementation
  • Own the strategic architecture of L.L. BLUE ENGINEERING's agent-first PMO — defining what the system needs to accomplish across the full delivery lifecycle, from proposal through project closeout
  • Drive implementation of agent-assisted workflows — rolling out new capabilities, onboarding the team, and ensuring adoption across active projects
  • Define success metrics for the agent-first PMO and validate that implemented workflows are producing measurable improvements in delivery quality, speed, and consistency
  • Partner with the Managing Principal on platform direction, tooling decisions, and agentic roadmap alignment
  • Work closely with the Project Controls Coordinator to receive operational feedback and translate it into strategic platform improvements
  • Ensure the agent-first PMO architecture connects across all delivery functions — engineering, field execution, estimating, proposals, and client communication
  • Stay current on emerging agentic platforms, orchestration tools, and industrial applications — evaluating relevance and bringing recommendations to the Managing Principal
Process & Systems Development
  • Build and maintain L.L. BLUE ENGINEERING's project delivery SOPs, templates, checklists, and playbooks across all delivery phases
  • Establish and manage document control, change management, and closeout processes
  • Drive continuous improvement in delivery workflows — identifying gaps, reducing rework, and improving handoff quality between engineering, field, and client teams
Team & Operations Coordination
  • Maintain resource visibility across active projects and flag capacity constraints early
  • Support onboarding of new project team members into delivery standards, tools, and agent-first workflows
  • Mentor and develop the Project Controls Coordinator — supporting their growth as the operational backbone of the agent-first PMO
  • Coordinate with HR, procurement, and administrative functions to support project readiness
Qualifications
  • Highly process-oriented — building SOPs, playbooks, and structured workflows is a demonstrated strength
  • Strong project management fundamentals — scheduling, scope control, risk management, and stakeholder communication
  • Genuine conviction that agentic AI represents a fundamental shift in how project operations work — with the strategic thinking to design systems around that conviction
  • Enough technical fluency in industrial systems integration (ICS, instrumentation, controls, construction) to hold scope conversations without constant translation
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and validate operational systems and workflows at a strategic level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable interfacing with field teams, engineering leads, and executive stakeholders
  • Strong collaborative relationship with operational team members — able to translate ground-level feedback into strategic platform decisions
  • Thrives in growing, fast-moving firms where processes are being invented, not just followed
  • Strong proficiency with project management and collaboration tools; hands‑on experience with AI platforms and workflow automation strongly preferred
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered
  • 7–10 years of project management experience with meaningful exposure to industrial, engineering, or technical services environments
  • Demonstrated experience building delivery processes, SOPs, or PMO infrastructure from the ground up — not just managing within existing frameworks
  • Experience with multi‑discipline project scopes spanning engineering, procurement, and field execution preferred
  • Hands‑on experience designing or implementing AI‑assisted workflows or automation platforms strongly preferred
Training & Certifications
  • PMP or equivalent project management certification preferred
  • Familiarity with industrial safety practices (OSHA 10 minimum) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating, configuring, and implementing agentic workflow platforms
  • Document control and change management practices
Licenses & Screening
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Background check and drug screening as required per client and contract requirements
  • Ability to obtain site access credentials and required clearances where applicable
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid role — remote‑capable with periodic presence at HQ and client sites
  • Travel may be required for project kickoffs, site visits, and key client milestones
  • Extended hours may be required during active proposal windows, commissioning events, and critical project milestones
  • Fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment with frequent context switching across multiple concurrent projects
Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated capability.
