Job Title

Fiber Splicing Technician

Location

*****Starting in Wolcott, IN and/or Floydada, TX**** and then traveling as needed. Per Diem is available to those who qualify.

Summary

This is a traveling position. The position will START in Wolcott, IN and/or Floydada, TX.... however, once our work is complete at this location we will later travel (with our team of techs) as we move to our next work location across the US.

The fiber optic cables we use (and splice) - for this project - will be mostly underground fiber optic cables.

The Fiber Splicing Technician is a position working for the Project Superintendent, to support all splicing requirements for all Sentry Electrical Group, Inc's fiber projects. The Fiber Splicer must have the ability to perform fiber optic splicing as well as understand engineering and splicing drawings. This person must possess strong project management skills, knowledge of construction practices for Outside Plant cable placement, and sufficient experience with computers to update drawings and have a background in Fiber Optic splicing documentation practices.

This position requires the technician to be traveling at all times. In this role, an employee will be expected to develop and demonstrate proficiency within the following responsibilities and competencies.When not splicing employee will be asked to work alongside crews in their tasks.

Essential Duties

  • Ability to fusion or mechanical splice SM or MM fiber optic cables, to include: terminate various types of fiber optic connectors (ST,SC, LC)
  • Work with engineers and/or OSP PM's to perform fusion splicing as directed.
  • Installation and testing of pressurized and non-pressurized closures on all types and sizes of cable.
  • Experience and knowledge in fiber acceptance testing, using Fiber Optic Scope and or a Fiber OTDR.
  • Installation and dressing of fiber optic cables (vertical/horizontal).
  • Serve as a resource to the internal staff on matters concerning splicing practices and procedures.
  • Provide red-line splicing diagrams to update network documentation.
  • Provide management with detailed reports of field splicing activity.
  • Communicate with Project Manager and Team Leader on workload status in order to meetdesignated goals.
  • Maintain company vehicle, and equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision.
  • Extensive driving and travelling up to 100%.
  • Must have excellent driving record.

Education and Experience


  • ****Must have 4+ years of splicing experience.
    Education Level: High School/Some College Preferred.
    Field Of Study: Drafting, Electronics or Telecommunications.
    Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    Must have excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented.
    Ability to interact effectively with other team members.
    Excellent skills in Outlook, Excel and MS Word. Hook up machine to test the OPGW.
    Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and quickly changing work environment with strict deadlines.
    Must be able to work independently without supervision.
    A combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Work Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally required to climb; stand; walk; to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the position may require frequent movement and activity relating to using keyboards, viewing data on computer displays, and communicating verbally and in writing to the needs of others.

Working Conditions

Work is normally performed in outdoor settings. Outdoor work may be required in the inspection of buried cable, construction sites, and field facilities. Performance of the position requires working safely and may require working outdoors in all weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.

Work Schedule

A typical work week is 6 days a week, 10 hours per day
