Who you are: You like working and spending personal time outdoors. You have a passion or a natural curiosity about forestry and trees. You have a 2- or 4-year degree in Forestry or a degree in another Natural Resource related field. You have worked internships and summer seasonal jobs gaining experience in forest management, reforestation, operations and wildland firefighting. Whatever your story is, you are eager with a positive attitude to learn, grow, and build the skills to become a licensed professional forester.
What the job is: This is a boots-on-the-ground position. Under the guidance of a Registered Professional Forester (RPF), you will spend your days supporting Timber Harvest Plan development as well as reforestation and stand improvement efforts. Daily tasks may include field reconnaissance, timber cruising, road and yarding engineering, and associated field layout including flagging harvest boundaries, classifying and buffering streams, programmatic permit compliance, stocking surveys, contractor crew oversight, stand improvement assessment that meet both production and environmental goals. This fieldwork feeds the Timber Harvest Plan (THPs) under California's rigorous permitting process, as well as the long-term goal of Green Diamond's California timberlands, so your documentation and attention to detail matters.
Listed are examples of the work this role performs:
  • Flags harvest boundaries, stream protection zones, wildlife retention areas, and wildlife key habitat features (green trees, snags, ponds, seeps etc.); conducts timber cruising, tree marking and stream classification.
  • Aids in the reconnaissance of timber stands to develop future roads and harvest areas.
  • Performs field reconnaissance and describes the conditions and constraints to the RPF and works with the RPF for specific guidance on harvest unit design and to resolve field layout problems.
  • Documents and records the technical information related to each THP in a concise and accurate manner.
  • Represents the THP on Pre-harvest inspections and current inspections on an as needed basis.
  • Participates in the Company safety program.
  • Perform stocking surveys and other data collection.
  • Assists with monitoring prescribed burning as part of the hazard abatement program.
  • Assist with monitoring and data collection on projects such as pre-commercial thinning, post-harvest slash treatments and biomass harvesting tasks.
  • May be assigned to other forestry-associated tasks as needed; these tasks may include wildlife or stream assessment projects, surveying tasks, and contract logging administration under RPF guidance.

If there are aspects of this job that would be new for you, we will help you learn the necessary skills to develop your knowledge base. Because we want you to be safe as you do your work navigating the forest, extensive safety training is accomplished for this role before any fieldwork begins.
What the department is like: The Forest Resource Department is comprised of three areas of focus which is forestry, road assessment, and silviculture all working together to accomplish short and long-term timber harvest planning and development across five geographically distinct Districts in Northern California. Operations are structured around a district management model that emphasizes accountability, on-site learning, and hands-on mentoring at all levels, with staff expected to bring curiosity and initiative to the field. We support employees pursuing licensing as a Registered Professional Forester by providing the field exposure and mentorship needed to get there, and advancement opportunities exist both within the department and across the broader organization. Where you'll work: You will work across nearly 400,000 acres of Green Diamond's privately held coastal forestland located along the Northern California coast in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino counties. Our offices are nestled in the redwood forest near the Pacific Ocean. Nearly every day your office will be the forest itself.
Compensation Details: The wage for this position is $23.00 to $30.20 per hour based on your experience and demonstrated skill level. The wage is just one part of Green Diamond's total compensation package. Other rewards include eligibility to receive an annual company financial bonus and a bonus based on your own performance.
In addition, Green Diamond offers a generous benefit package to include medical/vision and dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan with match and profit sharing. Paid time off includes 9 designated and up to 2 personal holidays, 10 vacation days, 10 sick days, 30 days parental leave, 3 days bereavement, an extra 2 days bereavement unpaid, jury duty, 1 volunteer day, and 5 days family care.
