Job description

South Portland Schools is seeking a Director of Operations & Safety to oversee the School Department's district wide service operations and safety protocol.

This key position will: 

  • Serve as a leader for emergency preparedness and safety plans.
  • Provide supervision and support to the Directors of Buildings and Grounds and Food Services.
  • Provide direct supervision to the Transportation Department ensuring that all operations are completed efficiently and effectively
  • Ensure that the students and families of our district are provided a safe, clean, nutritious environment in which to learn.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the School Department's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Manages two subordinate supervisors who supervise approximately 90 employees in the areas of  Buildings and Grounds and Food Service and provides direct supervision to the Transportation Department.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • Academic degree in business administration, public  administration, educational administration, or specific field related to areas of supervision preferred.
  • Executive level experience in a public sector organization with responsibility for administration.
