Summary:
The Process Improvement Specialist as a central function of Patient Safety manages, organizes, coordinates, supports, and participates in process and performance measurement and improvement activities for Northern Light Health member organizations. This central role incorporates quality and safety tools and strategies to serve as a resource, consultant and educator for inpatient and outpatient frontline staff, managers, directors, physicians, and leaders within the large health system. This includes conducting qualitative and quantitative assessments to define the scope and impact of process issues with a clear understanding of system level trends and areas of risk and opportunity. They will demonstrate a deep understanding of change management and high reliability principles and will apply those to all projects. This role will drive improvement in patient outcomes through collaboration, continuous monitoring, and implementation to meet goals. The incumbent must demonstrate a strong understanding of the Clinical Process Improvement Program framework and other quality improvement tools (Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA). This position will report to and align with the goals and safety strategy set forth by the Associate Vice President of Patient Safety and will be deployed to member organizations based for specific process improvement projects with clear expectations requiring demonstrated results.
Responsibilities:
- Understands system level patient safety strategic vision and aligns projects with goals.
- Works with AVP of Patient safety and stakeholders of all levels from all member organizations (front line clerical and clinical staff, department directors, committee chairs, providers, chiefs of service, etc.) using baseline performance data to identify process improvement projects, provide continuous support for the project and encourage dynamic adjustments in project approach when desired results are not met.
- Responsible for all aspects of project life cycle including the definition, design, development, deployment, maintenance, and benefits tracking of assigned initiatives/projects, from original concept past final implementation and continued support to operations refinement and benefits realization.
- Screens occurrences and poor clinical quality results through auditing of the patient's medical record for all member organizations, as well as through data provided via multiple platforms; Cerner, Power Insight, Tableau, etc. to address potential areas of focus for patient safety and performance improvement priorities.
- Collaborates closely and daily with Manager, Patient Safety, Risk Management team and system level leaders to bring areas of risk and opportunity gathered from apparent and root cause analyses from patient safety events forward as process improvement projects.
- Engages front line leadership teams; supervisors, managers and directors throughout entire process to become deeply involved in projects. Ensures unit level leaders take ownership of project through education, change management methodology and buy in.
- Assists with the development of review criteria needed for the monitoring and evaluation of projects, i.e. collection methodologies, reporting design, tools, etc.
- Leverages Northern Light Health's Patient Safety Organization and event reporting system community platform as well as best practices to establish thresholds and benchmarking for process improvement projects.
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; develops alternative solutions; works well in group problem solving situations; uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
- Reports wins, opportunities, outcomes and areas of potential risk to system Patient Safety, Quality Directors and local leaders, including executive teams when indicated.
- Influences and inspires teams across the organization and gains buy in by fully understanding frontline teams' perspectives by maintaining consistent communication and gaining feedback throughout across the entire span of the project.
