Job description

Primary Purpose

This internship will support the Environmental Health & Safety team by conducting comprehensive reviews of equipment inventories to ensure energy-isolating devices are accurately identified and documented.  Working closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams, the intern will evaluate hazardous energy sources, develop and update Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and support initiatives that strengthen regulatory compliance and employee safety.  The project will focus on continuous improvement of energy control programs and the effective management of hazardous energy in a manufacturing environment.   

Project Highlights

  1. Conduct hands-on reviews of equipment and hazardous energy sources to strengthen Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) compliance and employee safety across manufacturing operations.
  2. Revise and develop LOTO standard operating procedures that directly support Mountaire's Goal Zero initiative by improving hazardous energy control processes and reducing exposure to serious injuries.
  3. Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Safety teams to ensure employees have clear, accurate, and effective procedures to safely perform their work.
  4. Gain real-world experience in safety program management, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  5. Contribute to projects that enhance workplace safety performance while supporting operational excellence and employee well-being.
  6. Completes assigned tasks identified by department mentor.
  7. Attends semi-monthly seminar series.
  8. Completes and presents summer project presentation.
  9. Completes internship evaluations at weeks 5 and 10.
  10. Follows all company safety policies, standard operating procedure (SOP) regulations, as well as supports the Goal Zero mission statement.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety & Environmental Health (OSEH), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.  
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate risks, interpret technical information, and support safety initiatives.
  • Ability to review, develop, and document procedures with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication collaboration skills with the ability to work across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Safety teams.
  • Self-motivated, detail-orientated team player with a strong commitment to workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Must pass the Mountaire Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 

Internship Program Requirements

  • Complete assigned project identified by department mentor.
  • Attend weekly seminar series across different Mountaire facilities.
  • All interns must be available to travel to Delaware during the last week of the program or final presentations (August 2-6, 2027).
  • All interns are required to complete a 10-minute presentation on their project at the conclusion of summer.  Presentations will take place in Millsboro, DE at the Administrative Building during the week of August 2-6.
  • All interns must complete a mid-way evaluation (week 5) along with a final evaluation (week 10).
