Job description

Summary
Responsible for maintaining and enhancing the availability of network services for the City of Garland departments, employees and citizens.
Pay Range:$68,722.16 - 91,100.57 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Build, install and configure, and support servers in a physical and virtual environment.
  • Manage and configure Exchange Servers, Microsoft Windows Active Directory, DNS and group policy configurations.
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain server operating systems and application software.
  • Design, installation, migration, maintenance and operations support for infrastructure hardware and applications.
  • Manage system growth through effective capacity planning and timely recommendations for upgrades.
  • Determine standards and policies for access to network services.
  • Plan and implement expansion and upgrade of network architecture, network systems and applications.
  • Monitor and fine-tune system performance.
  • Oversee infrastructure hardware, operating system, and application patch maintenance.
  • Create and maintain documentation of enterprise infrastructure topology and system configurations.
  • Assist with IT and ad hoc projects as determined by business need.
  • Participate in on-call support after-hours, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Mentor and train junior staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four-year college degree
  • 4 years related experience designing, deploying, and maintaining Windows Server environments.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer Science or related area of study
  • 6 years or more IT experience in an environment supporting Microsoft Windows with more than 100 production servers
  • 4 years or more IT experience in an environment supporting a Microsoft Exchange email environment
  • 3 years or more IT experience in an environment supporting Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
  • 3 years or more IT experience in an environment supporting Linux (or similar) operating system

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of VMWare Virtual Infrastructure
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Windows operating systems
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience designing, deploying, and maintaining Exchange, Windows Server, including Active Directory and IIS
  • Intermediate understanding of networking technologies and protocols
  • Skill in utilizing Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio)
  • Skill in operating What's Up Gold Network Monitoring Software or comparable
  • Skill in CommVault backup software or comparable
  • Ability to operate under stressful, time-sensitive deadlines
  • Ability to communicate clearly on varying levels of technological knowledge
  • Ability to gather, analyze and organize information
  • Ability to create, read, analyze and interpret technical diagrams and written procedures

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) or ability to achieve certification during probationary period

The incumbent works in a typical office environment; relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. The incumbent must be able to use fingers to feel and have sufficient dexterity to sort and hold small wires, connect cables and install small connectors into sockets. The incumbent must be able to discern a broad spectrum of colors used in network cable.
