What does an operating system engineer do?

An Operating System Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and optimizing operating systems that run on computers and servers. They work on the core components that manage hardware resources, enable software applications, and ensure system security and stability. Their duties often include writing system-level code, troubleshooting performance issues, implementing updates, and collaborating with hardware and software teams. Operating System Engineers play a critical role in ensuring that computing environments are efficient, reliable, and secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operating system engineer?

To thrive as an Operating System Engineer, you need a deep understanding of computer science principles, operating system internals, and strong programming skills in languages like C, C++, or Rust, often backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with kernel development, debugging tools, virtualization platforms, and experience with version control systems (such as Git) are typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills ensure the reliability, performance, and security of operating systems, which are foundational to all computing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by operating system engineers when maintaining system stability in large-scale environments?

Operating System Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing software patching across diverse hardware, ensuring compatibility with legacy applications, and minimizing downtime during critical updates. In large-scale environments, balancing security with performance and reliability can be complex, especially when multiple teams depend on the systems. Effective communication with development, security, and IT operations teams is essential to address these issues proactively and maintain overall system stability.

What is the difference between Operating System Engineer vs System Administrator?

AspectOperating System EngineerSystem Administrator
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and optimizing operating systemsMaintaining, configuring, and supporting existing systems
Skills & CertificationsLinux/Unix, scripting, OS architecture, certifications like RHCE or Linux FoundationSystem management, network setup, troubleshooting, certifications like CompTIA Server+ or Microsoft Certified
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, R&D, engineering projectsIT support, data centers, enterprise environments
Industry UsageTech companies, hardware firms, software developmentCorporate IT, government agencies, healthcare, finance

While both roles involve working with operating systems, Operating System Engineers focus on designing and developing OS solutions, whereas System Administrators manage and support existing systems. The roles complement each other but serve different stages of the system lifecycle.

Job description

Are you someone who likes to think creatively and take on big challenges? At SNC, we work on meaningful projects-from exploring space to supporting service members and building systems that keep the world connected. Join our team!
As a Systems Engineer, you will support projects by helping define requirements, integrate different parts of a system, and assist with testing activities (Verification & Validation). You will also use Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as Cameo to help design architectures and ICDs from the ground up, then organize and communicate said system designs. This requires someone who has a background in software integration/development and is able to develop MBSE models from the ground up by reverse engineering already developed software products, network topologies, and system architectures.
In this role, you will contribute to important project tasks such as system analysis, planning, and identifying risks. You will help guide key project decisions and support major deliverables using your understanding of system architecture, system design, and the overall system lifecycle.
You will need to be comfortable working in a fast-changing environment where priorities may shift quickly. This role also involves working in a software-heavy environment, so the ability to collaborate with software teams and adapt to evolving technical needs is important.
Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills will help you work effectively with others, support team members, and ensure projects stay aligned with company goals.
The ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance), Aviation, and Security (IAS) business area is a leader in ISR and aviation, it is a leading prime manned and unmanned aircraft systems integrator for innovative, high-performance ISR and aviation systems. Its end-to-end Command, Control, Computers, Communications and Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities encompass design, integration, test, certification, ground/flight training and complete logistics support. IAS tailors solutions to customer cost, performance, and schedule requirements and designs to consistently exceed expectations - with an unrivaled record of on time and on (or under) budget deliveries.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in systems engineering or a related discipline
(A higher-level degree may reduce the experience requirement.)
  • Experience supporting system requirements, integration, testing, and MBSE design.
  • Strong understanding of Cameo and building Software Centric MBSE models from the ground up
  • Strong understanding of Tactical Data Links e.g., JREAP-C, UCI, DIS, VMF, MADL, TTNT, CEC, etc.
  • Willingness and desire to work in a fast-changing environment where project needs, priorities, and technical details can shift quickly.
  • Comfortable working in a software-heavy environment, collaborating closely with software engineering teams.
  • Working understanding of basic software engineering concepts and common operating systems, including Linux.
  • Adaptability and willingness to adjust to new tools, processes, and evolving technical challenges.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining clear organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance is required.

Responsibilities
  • Help with defining project requirements, integrating different parts of a system, and supporting testing activities.
  • Support system analysis, project planning, and identifying potential risks.
  • Contribute to major project tasks and make sure work aligns with team and company goals.
  • Assist with designing system architecture and monitoring technical progress throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Communicate clearly and work closely with team members and stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance and support to teammates when needed.
  • Use basic knowledge of standard mechanical and systems engineering practices, including requirements management and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and one that may require you to wear multiple hats at times
  • Ability and willingness to support live events by developing and utilizing test cards for system validation/troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with real-time or embedded systems.
  • Experience with tools such as DOORS, Cameo, or MATLAB.
  • Some knowledge of Department of Defense (DoD) message standards.
  • Understanding of MBSE and requirements management best practices.
  • Experience with INCOSE standards or a CSEP certification.
  • Background working in the Aerospace or Defense industry.
  • Experience helping to define and update system baselines or performing trade studies.
  • Understanding of tracking key technical performance metrics.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills.
  • Familiarity with Agile ways of working or Scrum Master certification.

Essential Functions
  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
  • Sufficient hand and finger dexterity for system modeling and documentation tasks.
