Job description

Position Description: JOB SUMMARY
To act as patient advocate, providing continuity of care designed to meet individual patient needs through collaboration with other members of the health care team. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Center. The Circulating Nurse will assess the perioperative needs of individual patients including but not limited to adult, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah.
CPR and ACLS Certification
Demonstrates ability to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
Demonstrates ability to lift and/or carry over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
Demonstrates ability to push/pull over 50 pounds on a regular basis.
Patient care activities may require the ability to exert force over 50 lbs.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
Category I exposure to bloodborne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Prepares room, equipment and supplies needed for procedure. Assists anesthesia in obtaining supplies.
1.1. Audits anesthesia narcotics with anesthesia, at beginning and end of each day. Restocks narcotics, as needed.
2. Opens sterile packs and supplies, using Surgeon's preference card for specific requests.
3. A preoperative assessment is performed that includes:
3.1. Identify patient and introduce self to patient.
3.2. Determine a plan of care based on individual needs which include pain and safety measures.
3.3. Confirm Consent, H&P, Lab Results, Operative Site, and allergies.
3.3.1. Changes to Consent will be made per policy.
3.4. Necessary patient teaching will be done at this time.
3.5. Complete Safe Surgery Checklist.
3.6. Completes Quality Tracking Sheet
4. Brings patient to Operating Room suite and assists patient to the operating bed, after braking of gurney.
5. Positions patient for safe functional alignment, exposure of surgical site and to provide physical support.
6. Informs front desk and PACU of progress. Requests patients family/S.O. be taken to consultation room, to meet with surgeon at end of procedure.
7. Assists anesthesia providers with monitor leads, blood pressure cuff and oximeter placement and remain at patient's side during induction and positioning.
8. Prepares patient's operative site, again confirming procedure and site with Surgeon's history and physical and the operating room team. Participates in Time Out procedure.
9. Directs overhead spot lights and connects equipment such as electrocautery, suction and power equipment.
9.1. Assures all medications are clearly labeled, if not used immediately.
10. Performs sponge, needle and instrument counts, if required. Obtains and opens any sterile supplies needed through out procedure.
11. Responsible for obtaining specimen from the sterile field, labeling and documenting the specimen, placing it in the proper media and signing it in the Specimen Log Book.
12. Assists in applying the dressing and transporting the patient to the gurney, from the operating room table, following policy and procedures regarding safety issues, not only for the patient but for oneself.
13. Assists in the breakdown of the room and preparing the room for the next procedure.
13.1. Assists in the cleaning of the OR, putting extra supplies and equipment away and assuring OR is stocked and ready for next use.
14. Maintains an aseptic controlled environment.
15. Follows proper procedures regarding exposure to Category 1 tasks.
16. Follows proper procedures for handling hazardous waste materials.
17. Documents information required on operating room record.
18. Accompanies patient to PACU, assists in transfer of patient care and gives report of patient status to PACU RN.
19. Follows appropriate nursing care policies and procedures at all times.
20. Notifies Director of Nursing of equipment and instruments needing repair and or service.
21. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
