Building Engineer

Location: Alexandria, Virginia

Pay: $30-$35

Full-Time

Position Summary

The Building Engineer is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of all building systems while supervising custodial staff, contractors, and vendors. This position serves as the lead facilities professional for the campus and is responsible for ensuring a safe, clean, efficient, and fully operational environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems with proven leadership experience managing maintenance and custodial teams.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Operations

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems.

  • Ensure all building systems operate safely and efficiently.

  • Conduct routine facility inspections and identify maintenance priorities.

  • Coordinate preventive maintenance programs and ensure timely completion of work orders.

  • Respond to facility emergencies and oversee corrective actions.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise Maintenance Technicians, and Custodial staff.

  • Assign daily work orders and maintenance priorities.

  • Monitor staff performance and provide coaching, training, and technical guidance.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing coverage for facility operations and emergencies.

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and customer service.

Vendor & Contractor Management

  • Coordinate outside contractors and service providers.

  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure work is completed according to specifications.

  • Assist with obtaining quotes and coordinating maintenance projects.

  • Support capital improvement and facility upgrade projects.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, safety, environmental, and building regulations.

  • Maintain maintenance records, inspection reports, and preventive maintenance schedules.

  • Assist with regulatory inspections and corrective action plans.

  • Monitor inventory, equipment, and maintenance supplies.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commercial, institutional, healthcare, government, or educational facilities maintenance experience.

  • 2+ years of supervisory or lead maintenance experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and building systems.

  • Experience coordinating contractors, vendors, and maintenance projects.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIULPE 3rd Class Engineer License

  • Maryland 1st Grade Stationary Engineer License

  • DC 6th Class Operating Engineer License

  • EPA Universal Certification

  • HVAC Certification

  • Building Automation System (BAS/BMS) experience

  • Boiler and Chiller Operations experience

  • Experience in K-12, higher education, healthcare, or government facilities
