Performs installation, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance and repair on all steam generation units, absorption systems, reciprocating systems, cooling towers, air handling and water delivery systems, fans and pumps to ensure uninterrupted operation of the cooling system and supporting equipment. Diagnoses problems, orders parts, repairs, services and/or otherwise equipment that uses freon as the basic cooling vehicle.  Develops solutions to installation and maintenance problems. Services and repairs pneumatic controls and associated equipment.

  • Reads and uses blueprints, schematics, specifications, mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings in order to effect repairs; works from oral, written and electronic work orders
  • Installs portable air/water cooled refrigeration units, ice machines, walk in boxes.  Fabricates and install metallic and non-metallic parts
  • Inspects equipment on a regular basis as part of preventive maintenance program and conducts required tests as scheduled to anticipate malfunctions that may lead to breakdown of cooling system and/or supporting equipment; lubricates, adjusts and cleans equipment as directed by the preventive maintenance work order and/or supervisor
  • Determines cause of breakdowns; removes, disassembles, cleans and lubricates all component parts as appropriate
  • Removes and replaces worn or broken parts and reassembles and adjusts cooling unit
  • Performs major rebuilding work on absorption/reciprocating equipment and supporting system
  • Repairs or salvages defective components
  • Determines type and quantity of chemicals required to keep cooling system and supporting equipment operational and uses appropriately
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards
  • Prepares bills-of-materials to order replacement parts as necessary and in a timely manner to avoid prolonged shutdown of equipment or systems.

Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent required.

Graduation from a trade school with specialization in refrigeration mechanics required. Section 608 EPA Universal Certified required.

Certificate of Qualification/Fitness for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q01/Q99) preferred. -- certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment.

Certificate of Fitness to Operate Air Compressor (G35) required -- certification must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment. Certificate of Fitness for Hot Torch Work (G60) preferred. 5 years’ experience in a similar position.  Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of all required operational theory and the ability to make mechanical repairs as required in this trade. Ability to follow verbal instructions. Ability to select and use tools appropriate to repairs.  Reads and uses blueprints, schematics, specifications and mechanical drawings. Good oral and written communication skills.
