What does an opera director do?
An Opera Director is responsible for overseeing the artistic vision and staging of an opera production. They work closely with performers, designers, and conductors to bring the story to life through movement, characterization, and visual elements. Their role includes interpreting the score and libretto, guiding rehearsals, and ensuring cohesion between music and theatrical performance. Ultimately, they shape the overall audience experience by blending music, drama, and stagecraft.
What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an opera director?
To thrive as an Opera Director, you need a deep understanding of music, dramatic interpretation, and stagecraft, usually supported by formal training in theatre, music, or opera direction. ORGANIZATION: Merola Opera Program was founded in 1957 and named in honor of San Francisco Opera’s first general director, Gaetano Merola. Merola is responsible for its own fundraising, primarily from loyal members and foundations.
Merola’s mission is to define the future of opera. The Merola Opera Program is an internationally respected model for building strong careers in opera, with a proven balance of training, performance, and individualized support. Their team includes an energetic lean staff and a dedicated and engaged Board of Directors. Partner with the Executive Director, Board, Development Committee, and staff to identify major donors, eligible foundations and corporate sponsors.
