Industry UsageUsed by restaurants for reservationsPerformed by restaurant staff

Opentable is a digital platform that helps restaurants manage reservations online, while a restaurant host is a staff member who greets guests and manages seating in person. Both roles are essential in the hospitality industry but serve different functions—one is technology-based, and the other is customer-facing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OpenTable Reservationist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OpenTable Reservationist, you need strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with restaurant operations, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency with the OpenTable reservation system, POS software, and basic office technology is important. Exceptional communication, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities help you manage bookings and resolve guest concerns effectively. These skills ensure seamless guest experiences, optimized table management, and contribute to the overall success of the restaurant.

What is OpenTable?

OpenTable is an online restaurant reservation service that allows users to book tables at participating restaurants through its website or mobile app. Founded in 1998, OpenTable partners with thousands of restaurants worldwide to provide real-time reservation capabilities, manage table availability, and streamline the booking process for diners. The platform also offers reviews, menus, and loyalty rewards, making it easier for users to discover and reserve dining experiences. For restaurants, OpenTable provides tools to manage bookings, customer relationships, and marketing.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working at OpenTable, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals at OpenTable, particularly in roles related to customer support, sales, or product development, often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to evolving technology, managing high customer expectations, and collaborating across diverse teams. Staying up-to-date with new feature rollouts and understanding the unique needs of both diners and restaurant partners is crucial. OpenTable fosters a collaborative environment where team members are encouraged to share feedback, participate in cross-functional projects, and utilize ongoing training resources to overcome these challenges and drive innovation.
