How much do open auditions jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for open auditions in the United States is $13.72, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $9.62 and $15.87 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are open auditions?

Open auditions are casting calls where anyone interested can try out for a role, regardless of their experience or prior connections. Unlike closed auditions, which are typically by invitation only, open auditions allow actors, singers, dancers, or other performers to showcase their talents in front of casting directors or producers. These auditions are commonly used in theater, film, and television to discover new talent. Participants usually need to prepare a short performance piece and may be asked to read scripts or perform other tasks during the process.

What can I expect during the open audition process and how should I prepare for it?

During open auditions, you'll typically perform a prepared piece—such as a monologue, song, or dance routine—in front of a panel, often alongside other candidates. The atmosphere is usually fast-paced and competitive, and you may be asked to read sides, participate in group exercises, or demonstrate additional skills on the spot. To prepare, research the production, rehearse your chosen material thoroughly, and arrive early to complete any paperwork and warm up. Open auditions offer a valuable opportunity to be seen by casting professionals, even if you don’t have an agent, and can sometimes lead to callbacks or future opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at open auditions, and why are they important?

To succeed at open auditions, performers generally need strong acting, singing, or dancing abilities, as well as a basic understanding of audition etiquette and requirements. Familiarity with audition-specific materials such as prepared monologues, sheet music, or choreography, and experience with self-taping or casting platforms can be beneficial. Confidence, adaptability, and the ability to take direction help candidates stand out in these high-pressure environments. These skills are critical for making a memorable impression and demonstrating readiness for professional roles in competitive performing arts settings.

What is the difference between Open Auditions vs Casting Calls?

AspectOpen AuditionsCasting Calls
PurposeTo discover new talent through public auditionsTo invite specific actors or performers for a role
AudienceGeneral public, including amateurs and professionalsSelected performers based on casting criteria
ProcessOpen to anyone meeting basic requirementsBy invitation or application, often with specific requirements
UsageCommon in theater, film, and TV for talent discoveryUsed in casting for specific roles in productions

Open auditions are public events where anyone can try out for a role, often to discover new talent. Casting calls are targeted invitations for specific performers based on casting needs. While open auditions focus on broad talent discovery, casting calls are more selective, aiming to fill particular roles with pre-identified candidates.
