Job description

Company Description Heartland Co-op is a farmer-owned cooperative serving more than seventy communities across Iowa. The organization provides essential products and services to local farmers in key areas such as Grain, Agronomy, Seed, Petroleum, and Feed. Heartland Co-op relies on a diverse team of skilled professionals to support these operations and help achieve organizational goals. Role Description The Assistant Location Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in Gilman, IA. Reporting to the Location Manager, this position assists in directing daily operations across the facility—including a 4,692,000-bushel grain storage site with shuttle railroad capabilities, an 18,000-ton dry fertilizer building, NH3 (dry & liquid fertilizers), packaged chemicals, and bulk petroleum storage. Under the guidance of the Location Manager, this position helps oversee facility safety compliance, grain quality management, inventory control, and accounting functions like budgeting, sales, prepay, and expense reporting. The Assistant Location Manager assists with supervising staff, directing work, supporting customer service, and stepping in to fulfill full site leadership responsibilities in the Location Manager's absence. The role also performs other duties as assigned by management.


Qualifications


  • Education & Experience: Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school required; or 1–2 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Agronomy Operations Experience: Experience in agricultural operations, high-capacity grain handling, shuttle rail operations, fertilizer storage (NH3, dry & liquid), packaged chemicals, and bulk petroleum.


  • Leadership & Supervisory Skills: Ability to assist in supervising staff, directing daily work, conducting interviews, training team members, evaluating performance, and resolving operational complaints.


  • Financial & Business Acumen: Budgeting skills to assist with planning, cost control, expense monitoring, and basic financial oversight of location operations.


  • Customer Service & Communication: Strong customer service skills with a commitment to responsive support, along with effective verbal and written communication to interact with members, staff, and leadership.


  • Technical & Math Abilities: Basic math skills to calculate percentages, discounts, and measurements (like volume and area), along with the ability to read and understand work instructions, safety rules, and general business documents.


  • Computer Proficiency: Practical knowledge of business and inventory management software (specifically AS 400 accounting systems), along with basic spreadsheet skills and experience using Outlook email for day-to-day communication.


  • Licensing & Physical Requirements: Must maintain a valid driver’s license and commercial insurability at all times. Ability to perform heavy physical exertion (occasionally lifting up to 100 lbs), work extended seasonal hours, and obtain a weighing license or grain grading certificate if required.
