Job description

Job Scope

Develops and provides training sessions as part of the Police Academy curriculum. 


Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Develop lesson plans and training materials consistent with learning objectives established by MPOETC.

  2. Conduct training sessions as scheduled by the Director.

  3. Report on time and remain for the allotted time period for all teaching assignments.

  4. Participate in orientation session and complete required trainings.  

  5. Maintain current certifications required by MPOETC to teach in the academy setting. 

  6. Follow standards outlined in the Commission’s Academy Director and Instructor Code of Conduct.

  7. Assist in developing and implementing curriculum.

  8. Promote and create a professional classroom or instructional environment that supports and promotes a healthy, safe, and respectful atmosphere. 

  9. Attendance at all mandatory meetings.

  10. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education: Instructors must meet one of the following combinations of education & experience:                                                                                                                                                  

  • Five (5) years of police experience

  • An Associate of Arts degree plus four (4) years of police experience

  • A Bachelor of Arts degree plus three (3) years of police experience

  • Attorneys licensed to practice in the PA Commonwealth, or other instructors teaching subject areas requiring professional education or licensure, are exempt from the educational and police experience requirements. 


Experience & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of student assessment tools, strategies, and modalities preferred. 
  • Must be a certified general instructor or be able to obtain certification as a general instructor with MPOETC.
  • To obtain certification as a general instructor, one of the following requirements must be met: 
    • Successfully complete a Commission-approved instructor development course, or

    • Hold a valid teaching certificate by the Department of Education, or

    • Be employed full-time with academic rank at an accredited college or university


Computer Skills: 

  • Working knowledge of MS Office.     


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

  • PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34). 
  • Any additional criminal background checks as required by MPOETC. 
  • Be MPOETC certified to instruct as a General and/or Special Instructor at the Academy. 
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License when teaching courses that require it.    


Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time up to one hour in duration, be capable of lifting 35-pounds, and be able to frequently operate a computer and a motor vehicle. 
  • There are frequent occasions when classroom activities involve the instruction of physical conditioning and moving large bulky objects. 
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Work Environment: 

  • The work environment is normally quiet to moderate in noise level. 
  • There are frequent occasions when classroom activities involve prolonged exposure to outside elements in all seasons. 
  • Instructors will be exposed to firearms, ammunition, handcuffs, and various other law enforcement equipment.
