Online Picker information

What is an online picker?

Online Pickers are employees who are responsible for selecting and gathering items from a store or warehouse to fulfill customer orders placed online. They use order lists or handheld devices to locate products, ensure accuracy, and prepare items for packing and delivery. Online Pickers play a crucial role in the e-commerce process by ensuring that customers receive the correct products quickly and efficiently.

What is the difference between Online Picker vs Warehouse Associate?

AspectOnline PickerWarehouse Associate
Primary RolePicking online orders for shipmentGeneral warehouse tasks including packing, shipping, and inventory
Work EnvironmentOrder fulfillment centers, often with technology-based tasksBroader warehouse settings, manual labor involved
Required SkillsAttention to detail, familiarity with inventory systemsPhysical stamina, basic warehouse skills

Online Pickers focus specifically on selecting items for online orders, often using handheld devices or scanners. Warehouse Associates perform a wider range of tasks, including packing, shipping, and inventory management. While both roles are essential in warehouse operations, Online Pickers typically work in technology-driven environments with a focus on order accuracy, whereas Warehouse Associates handle broader physical tasks.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an online picker?

To thrive as an Online Picker, you need strong attention to detail, basic literacy and numeracy skills, and a good understanding of inventory processes, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and handheld devices is typically required. Efficiency, reliability, and the ability to work well independently or as part of a team are standout soft skills. These skills ensure accurate, timely order fulfillment and customer satisfaction in a fast-paced e-commerce environment.

What are common challenges faced by online pickers and how can they be managed?

Online Pickers often encounter challenges such as managing high order volumes during peak periods, accurately locating items in the warehouse, and meeting strict time targets. Effective organization, familiarity with the warehouse layout, and strong attention to detail are essential for success. Many employers offer training on inventory systems and order management tools, which can help pickers work more efficiently and reduce errors. Communicating proactively with teammates and supervisors also plays a key role in overcoming obstacles and maintaining a smooth workflow.
