Job Duties
Norfolk Health Department is seeking to fill a Wage PH Nursing positions who can independently provides professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings. Performs nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.
**Requires licensure as an RN in Virginia or compact state. If a new graduate, must obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Requires adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety policies and all other state policies.
Wage Employment are subject to the following conditions:
• Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
• Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act.
• Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work.
• Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average over the course of a year. Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1,500 hours during the period of May 1 - April 30 of the following year (the Standard Measurement Period).
• Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1,500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period, the employee may be rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
THIS RECRUITMENT QUALIFIES FOR EXCEPTIONAL RECRUITMENT AND INCENTIVE OPTIONS, INCLUDING SIGN ON BONUS, LEAVE GRANT, AND OTHER POTENTIAL BENEFITS MAY BE OFFERED.
Minimum Qualifications
• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities.
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique.
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public.
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management.
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required.
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR.
Additional Considerations
• Bi-lingual and experience with diverse cultures.
• Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred.
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion.
• If working with the EPI response team, Certified in Infection Control (CIC) preferred and experience in hospital or long-term care facility infection control.
• BSN preferred
