New River Community Technical College provides comprehensive, quality higher education, workforce training and community education programs and services. We aspire to make a difference in the communities in which we serve!
We are seeking an enthusiastic professional who is passionate about teaching. Candidate preference will be given to those applicants who reside in the region in which we serve.
Position Summary
The Math Adjunct Instructor provides high-quality instruction in mathematics courses that support
general education, transfer, career and technical programs, and student progression. Assignments may
include quantitative reasoning, algebra, enhanced or co-requisite college algebra, introductory
statistics, mathematics for education programs, or other courses consistent with the instructor's
credentials and departmental need. The instructor creates a structured, supportive learning
environment that develops quantitative reasoning, problem solving, mathematical communication, and
confidence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach assigned mathematics courses in accordance with approved course descriptions, student learning
outcomes, departmental expectations, and College policies.
Prepare and publish a complete course syllabus and instructional schedule before the course opens to
students.
Plan and deliver accurate, organized, and accessible instruction using examples, applications, guided
practice, and appropriate mathematical technology.
Meet all scheduled classes and maintain appropriate instructor availability through office hours, email,
telephone, or other approved communication channels.
Assess student learning frequently; provide constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback; maintain
accurate attendance, grade, and achievement records; and submit midterm and final grades by
established deadlines.
Use the College learning management system, calculators or mathematical software, and approved
instructional technologies effectively for course delivery, communication, assessment, and
recordkeeping.
Participate in course and institutional assessment, including common assessment items, documentation
of student-learning results, and continuous improvement activities.
Coordinate with full-time mathematics faculty and academic leadership regarding course pacing,
prerequisite alignment, enhanced/co-requisite support, and student success concerns.
Maintain student confidentiality and comply with FERPA, accessibility requirements, nondiscrimination
standards, copyright requirements, and all applicable College procedures.
Complete required orientation, training, credentialing, and compliance activities and perform related
duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in mathematics; or a master's degree in a closely related field with at least 18 graduate
semester hours in mathematics, from a regionally accredited institution.
Demonstrated command of the mathematics content required for the assigned course.
Ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly, model multiple problem-solving approaches, and
evaluate student work consistently.
Basic proficiency with email, word processing, presentation software, web-based systems, and
instructional technology.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of successful college-level mathematics teaching or equivalent adult-learning
experience.
Experience teaching quantitative reasoning, algebra, college algebra, co-requisite or enhanced
mathematics, statistics, or mathematics for educators.
Experience teaching online, hybrid, Zoom, IVN, or dual-enrollment courses.
Experience with learning management systems, online homework platforms, outcomes assessment,
open educational resources, and accessible course design.
Evidence of effective work with first-generation students, adult learners, and students with varied levels of
mathematics preparation or mathematics anxiety.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough and accurate knowledge of the assigned mathematics content and its applications.
Ability to organize instruction around measurable learning outcomes and progressive skill development.
Strong mathematical, written, oral, interpersonal, and student-support communication skills.
Ability to diagnose learning gaps, provide timely intervention, and connect students with appropriate
academic support.
Ability to evaluate student performance fairly, consistently, and promptly.
Commitment to rigorous instruction, inclusive learning, ethical practice, continuous improvement, and
student success.
Work Schedule and Conditions
Teaching assignments may be scheduled during the day or evening and may be delivered in person,
online, hybrid, Zoom, Interactive Video Network (IVN), or another approved modality.
Regular and punctual attendance, reliable access to instructional technology, and timely communication
with students and the College are required.
The position may require travel among College locations. Reasonable accommodations will be provided
in accordance with applicable law and College policy.
Institutional Expectations
The instructor is expected to support New River CTC's mission of providing accessible, affordable, quality
education and workforce programs that meet regional needs. Employees are expected to model the
College's core values of Respect, Honesty, Education, and Community; maintain student confidentiality;
comply with College policies; and contribute to a learning environment characterized by belonging, ethical
conduct, continuous improvement, and community engagement.
Compensation and Appointment Terms
Compensation is based on the current adjunct faculty salary schedule. Appointments are made on a
semester-by-semester, course-by-course basis and do not guarantee future assignments. All appointments
are subject to funding, enrollment, credential verification, and final approval.
Application Materials

Current curriculum vitae or resume.
Unofficial transcripts for initial review; official transcripts may be required before employment.
Documentation of applicable licenses, certifications, or tested experience when relevant to the assigned
discipline.
