Job Summary
The Office of K-12 Partnerships is collaborating with Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools to bring the Math Corps summer program to the UM-Flint campus this summer. The Wayne State University Math Corps was established in 1992 as a combined mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for Detroit public school students. For over thirty years, the Math Corps has been working to provide children with the kinds of educational and lifetime opportunities that all kids deserve.
UM-Flint's Math Corps program will be held July 13- August 6, Monday - Thursday, with additional training sessions, orientation, and closing ceremonies before and after the program.
The High School Teaching Assistants (TA's) assist with instruction of the middle school participants. Main duties include: providing support in the classroom during instruction by keeping students on-task and engaged while also providing support and encouragement; providing homework help and tutoring outside of the classroom; serving as role models and chief stewards of the program culture; attending TA training; keeping a daily journal and attending daily debriefing; and most importantly, serving as big brothers and big sisters to the younger students.
Responsibilities*
The High School Teaching Assistants' (TA's) responsibilities include the following:
  • Attend, fully and on time, all training sessions, orientation, all program days, and the closing ceremonies, unless excused by the Program Coordinator.
  • Report at 9:00 am each morning for a daily morning meeting held by the College Instructor, and stay each day until dismissed by the Dean (at approximately 3:15 pm).
  • Assist in classroom management to prevent distractive talking, inattentiveness, or other inappropriate behavior on the part of their students.
  • To the best of their ability, teach and tutor the students to whom they are assigned.
  • To the best of their ability, contribute ideas for instructing and providing activities for their students.
  • Act as role models and mentors for their students, showing them respect and caring at all times.
  • Keep senior staff abreast of any significant event or circumstances in the lives of their students.
  • Report immediately to their CI or a member of the senior staff, anything at all that may threaten the well-being, physically or emotionally, of any student.
  • Carry out all academic responsibilities and assignments related to their own instruction in their assigned Algebra courses, including daily homework and weekly guided journals.
  • Be responsible for working with students during the morning in Team Time, where they will mentor and tutor their assigned middle school student(s) in their grade level mathematics.
  • At all times, act in a professional manner that is befitting someone who holds a teaching position at the University of Michigan-Flint.

  • Fluency with spoken English
  • Must attend mandatory training in mid-June at Wayne State University (transportation provided) and meet reliability expectations for the duration of the summer program

Desired Qualifications*
  • Successful completion of the Math Corps Super Saturday program at Carman-Ainsworth High School

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
