Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, online learning platforms, testing servicesOnline tutoring platforms, private tutoring, educational companies

The main difference between an Online Math Grader and an Online Math Tutor lies in their responsibilities. Graders primarily evaluate and score student work, while tutors actively teach, explain concepts, and support student learning. Both roles are remote and involve working within educational settings, but tutors engage more directly with students to improve understanding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online math grader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Math Grader, you need a solid background in mathematics, attention to detail, and typically a degree in math or education. Familiarity with digital grading platforms, learning management systems, and online assessment tools is often required. Strong written communication, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate, timely grading and support student learning in a remote educational environment.

What does an online math grader do?

An online math grader reviews and evaluates students' math assignments, tests, or exams submitted through digital platforms. They check for accuracy, provide feedback, and assign grades based on established rubrics or guidelines. Online math graders may work for educational institutions, tutoring companies, or standardized testing organizations, helping ensure fair and consistent assessment of students' mathematical understanding.

What are some common challenges faced by online math graders, and how can they be managed effectively?

Online Math Graders often encounter challenges such as interpreting diverse student handwriting or digital submissions, ensuring grading consistency across varying problem-solving methods, and managing a high volume of assignments within tight deadlines. To address these, graders can rely on clear, standardized rubrics, leverage digital grading tools for efficiency, and communicate regularly with teaching staff to clarify expectations. Staying organized and seeking ongoing training in grading software can also help streamline the process and maintain accuracy.

Job description

At AoPS, we believe that students learn best by working through challenging problems that present opportunities to develop problem-solving and critical reasoning skills through productive struggle and creative thinking. Our goal is for students to build a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics by grappling with why mathematics works.
We seek Math Curriculum Developers to shape innovative and engaging mathematical learning opportunities for motivated K-12 students.
The Math Curriculum Developer will be:
  • Expanding and refining our Beast Academy curriculum for motivated elementary school students who are willing to face hard problems
  • Creating courses, lessons, activities, games, and puzzles for delivery in our in-person AoPS Academy learning centers across the US
  • Helping advance the state of the art in online course delivery by designing courses and delivery tools in our AoPS Online School or our AoPS Academy Virtual Campus
  • Developing or refining specialty courses for very advanced math students in a range of grade-levels

You might be a good fit for this position if...
  • You've built a passion for math through teaching or doing mathematics, and are eager to guide motivated students on mathematical explorations
  • You have strong mathematical foundations and enjoy solving puzzles, like those found in our Beast Academy curriculum. You know a few creative ways to compute 1+3+5+7+...+199
  • You're excited about helping students grapple with and enrich their understanding of mathematical ideas through creating cognitively demanding math tasks
  • Your classroom experience as a teacher or student has given you strong intuition and conviction about how we might best inspire and train the great problem-solvers of the next generation
  • You look forward to the challenge of writing and designing for teachers, designing curricular materials that will empower them to provide engaging and rigorous classroom experience
  • In addition to being a math geek, you're a bit of a word geek, reading voraciously and fussing over your own writing
  • You have elementary or middle school math contest experience, as it is strongly preferred

Perks and Benefits:
This full-time role follows a hybrid schedule with three in-office days per week based at our headquarters in San Diego, CA. The hiring range for this role is $78k - $100k. Here are some things you can look forward to:
Some benefits of the position include:
  • Impact: The opportunity to have a wide range of avenues to share their love and understanding of mathematics with eager learners
  • Flexibility: Casual work environment with a hybrid work week (3 days a week in office) and flexible scheduling
  • Benefits: Multiple options for Medical, Dental and Vision plans
  • Future Planning: 401(k) with company match
  • Quality of Life: PTO Plan and supportive leadership that gives you the work-life balance you deserve
  • Ease of Transition: Relocation bonus (if currently located outside of San Diego)

Background Check:
Please note that employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.
Work Authorization:
Please note that in order to be considered for this position you must be legally authorized to work in the US. We are unable to offer sponsorship, including STEM-OPT and H-1B.
About AoPS:
Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) is on a mission to discover, inspire, and train the great problem solvers of the next generation. Since 2003, we have trained hundreds of thousands of the country's top students, including nearly all the members of the US International Math Olympiad team, through our online school, in-person academies, textbooks, and online learning systems. While our primary focus has been math for most of our history, through the years we have expanded our unique problem solving curriculum into more subjects, such as language arts, science, and computer science.
