Wethersfield Public Schools is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to serve as an English Language (EL) Tutor for students learning English with a primary focus to assist English Learners in the development of English language skills and the acquisition of academic concepts.
Position:ย  English Language Tutor for students learning English
School:ย  Hanmer Elementary School
Reports To:ย Building Principal
Start Date: ย Immediate




Compensation:ย  $28.00 - $33.02 per hour worked; paid for hours worked only
Hours:ย  20 hours/week (this is a union position)

The Tutor will help provide an effective and comprehensive education for English language learners in order for them to acquire English language proficiency and function successfully in academic and social settings.ย  The tutor will support students in grades Kindergarten to sixth, as speakers of other languages gain English language proficiency through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. ย 
Typical duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide English Language (EL) instruction and academic support for selected students using Spanish to support the acquisition of academic concepts;
  • Provide EL instruction and academic support for students from various languages;
  • Lesson development and curriculum implementation with a focus on core curriculum topics and skills;
  • Monitor and communicate student progress;
  • Provide LAS/Standardized testing support;
  • Provide support for all aspects of a student's day (class schedule, meal periods, etc.);
  • Provide students with positive feedback and encouragement;
  • Track and maintain records of student progress;
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to communicate goals/achievements and progress;
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the building Principal.ย 


Qualifications:

  • Two-year associate's degree is required; bachelor's degree is preferred;
  • Ability to work with students in a classroom, small group, and/or one-on-one environment;
  • Ability to follow teacher/staff directions with respect to instructional modifications and individualized student instructional improvement plans;
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
