This role involves on-site teaching, offering a vibrant, in-person learning experience.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Online Virtual School Teacher creates a supportive online learning environment that promotes student growth and academic success. They deliver instruction, monitor progress, and collaborate with students and families to meet individual learning needs. This role requires strong teaching skills, comfort with technology, and the ability to adapt classroom best practices to a virtual setting. Though the primary focus is on academic core instruction, teachers must be comfortable with supporting new users of technology.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions and duties listed below are intended to guide the various types of work that may be performed and are not exhaustive. Additional duties may be assigned by site administrators as needed to support students and site-based initiatives.
  • Teach material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned course schedule.
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process, including class discussions, assignments, projects, research, etc.
  • Maintain online asynchronous communication (and synchronous if appropriate) with students in online discussions, to assist students in achieving completion objectives, monitor completion of assignments and coach special projects.
  • Provide regular, accurate, and timely student-specific assistance, feedback, and support to students relative to their performance.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and staff on a regular basis to develop and update student learning plans and schedules, provide feedback on student work, suggest instructional approaches and strategies.
  • Ensure assessment guidelines and regulations are followed at all times.
  • Assist with the development of new curriculum or coursework in the virtual environment.
  • Ensure student growth and achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification and provide appropriate interventions if necessary.
  • Ensure that each student enrolled in a virtual/online course has accurate and up-to-date records and log all student and parent contact.
  • Manage field trips and make efforts to integrate trips into the curriculum.
  • Implement virtual methods of creating and maintaining a school community.
  • Review curriculum and devise alternate approaches to presenting lessons to increase student understanding.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge base and willingness to implement a variety of web 2.0 tools to enhance student virtual learning experiences.

Planning, Preparation, and Programming
  • Demonstrates mastery of content, pedagogy, resources, and knowledge of appropriate subject areas.
  • Sets instructional outcomes for diverse learners and provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Designs coherent instruction and student assessments aligned with Nevada Academic Content Standards.
  • Assist with school-wide data analysis, as part of a professional development needs assessment.
  • Implement instructional activities that contribute to a positive online learning environment where students are actively engaged in meaningful online learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with other members of the instructional team.
  • Clearly articulate deadlines, schedules, and procedures to students and parents to ensure that student's complete coursework in a timely manner.
  • Assist school site administrator with student placement.
  • Assist students and parents with technical support requests relating to the course interface and student information systems.
  • Uses a variety of programs and software applications, as appropriate, to complete instructional and administrative tasks.
  • Reinforces and collaborates with grade level and/or content area team the consistent use of proven, research-based strategies for effective classroom management, lesson co-planning, active student engagement, and virtual/online instructional delivery.
  • Participate in professional development as provided and scheduled by the school site administrator.

Special Education Responsibilities, if assigned:
Provides aide to Special Education students and other teachers needing assistance in the performance of several fundamental teaching responsibilities as described in Special Education law and in the four domains of the Teacher Performance Standards. Incumbent performs related work as required. (Special Education)
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with zone school to set up the change of placement IEP working with the zone case manager to monitor the implementation of the IEP.
  • Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with North Star Staff to ensure that the IEP is being appropriately implemented.
  • Assess student learning congruent with instructional and IEP goals, monitor weekly student progress and provide zone school case manager with regular updates.
  • Work collaboratively with the zone school to implement the IEP making sure the student needs and goals are met and followed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records
  • Work directly with students and provide assessment data as needed.

QUALFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

License/Certificates:
Possession of, or ability to obtain the following:
  • A valid State of Nevada driver license with a driving record acceptable to the District.
  • Possession of a valid Nevada teaching license.
  • State Licensure/ endorsement in multiple subject areas.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
  • Must hold an appropriate endorsement in the subject area being taught.

  • Online teaching experience and certification of online teacher training.
  • Home Visit Training.
  • Exceptional Communication skills written and oral with the understanding of the uniqueness of the online communication vs face to face.
