What is an Online Computer Vision specialist?

An Online Computer Vision specialist is a professional who designs and implements computer vision algorithms and systems that process images or videos in real-time over the internet or cloud platforms. Their work often involves developing applications for object detection, facial recognition, image classification, and video analysis that operate efficiently in online or streaming environments. These specialists need strong skills in programming, machine learning, and computer vision frameworks, and they often collaborate with data scientists and software engineers to deploy scalable solutions. Online Computer Vision is commonly used in industries such as security, healthcare, retail, and autonomous vehicles.

What is the difference between Online Computer Vision vs Computer Vision Engineer?

AspectOnline Computer VisionComputer Vision Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, AI, or related fields; knowledge of machine learning and programmingBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, AI, or related fields; strong programming skills in Python, C++, and experience with deep learning frameworks
Work EnvironmentRemote or online platforms, project-based tasks, often freelance or contract rolesOffice or remote, involved in developing and deploying computer vision models within teams
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, research labs focusing on AI applicationsTech firms, R&D departments, startups working on AI and image processing solutions

Online Computer Vision roles typically focus on applying computer vision techniques in online or remote settings, often involving freelance or project-based work. In contrast, Computer Vision Engineers are more involved in developing, implementing, and maintaining computer vision systems within organizations. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in work environment and scope of responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in online computer vision roles?

Professionals in online computer vision often encounter challenges such as processing large volumes of visual data in real-time and ensuring high accuracy in diverse and unpredictable environments. They must also address latency and bandwidth constraints when deploying models over the internet, and regularly update algorithms to keep up with evolving data patterns. Collaboration with data engineers, software developers, and product teams is essential to integrate vision solutions into scalable systems and deliver user-centric results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Online Computer Vision Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Online Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, machine learning, and image processing, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), experience with OpenCV, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or C++ are crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies enable the development of accurate, scalable computer vision solutions that drive innovation in real-time, online environments.

Job description

Job Description Overview:

The ASUS Robotics & AI Center is seeking a Senior Computer Vision Engineer to join our global research and development team. This role focuses on building the perception systems that allow our UAVs and other autonomous platforms to understand and operate in complex, real-world environments.

We are looking for a hands-on engineer with practical experience taking computer vision algorithms from prototype to production, a strong foundation in 3D geometry and multi-sensor data, and a passion for making the math, the algorithms, and the code work together on real hardware. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of computer vision, robotics, and embedded systems, and is motivated by the challenge of delivering robust perception under the constraints of real-world autonomy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and optimize computer vision algorithms for object detection, tracking, and visual recognition on UAVs and other autonomous platforms.
  • Develop 3D perception capabilities, including visual odometry, depth estimation, structure from motion, and SLAM, to support real-time mapping and navigation.
  • Build sensor fusion pipelines that integrate data from cameras, IMUs, GPS/GNSS, and other onboard sensors to produce accurate, low-latency situational awareness.
  • Optimize algorithms for deployment on resource-constrained edge and embedded compute platforms.
  • Characterize and quantify the performance of perception components through simulation, lab testing, and real-world field testing.
  • Collaborate with robotics, software, and hardware teams to integrate perception components into the broader autonomy stack.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented source code adhering to modern software development practices.
  • Work in a cross-functional team that takes ownership of the full software lifecycle.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with classical computer vision techniques and libraries (e.g., OpenCV) and with multi-sensor data integration (e.g., cameras, IMU, GPS/GNSS, LiDAR).
  • Strong fundamentals in linear algebra, probabilistic inference, and 3D geometry.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python, with a commitment to writing clean, well-architected code.
  • Understanding of software development best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, design patterns, source control management, and test automation.
  • Experience deploying perception software on embedded or edge compute platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with robotics, autonomous systems, or real-time perception applications is a plus.
  • Familiarity with GPU/CUDA programming for accelerated vision processing is a plus.
  • Flexibility to attend virtual meetings with the Taiwan-based team at least three nights per week.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work confidently in a rapidly changing, fast-paced and results-oriented corporate environment where a high degree of flexibility is required

Required Qualifications:

Years of Education

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field.

Work Experience

  • 5+ years of industry experience developing and deploying computer vision or perception software.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of: visual odometry, SLAM, structure from motion, multi-view geometry, or 3D reconstruction.
  • Practical experience with object detection, tracking, or segmentation, including training and deploying deep learning models using frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

Working Conditions:

  • Typically working in an office environment
  • This is an IN-OFFICE position in Boston, MA (3 days in office / 2 days work from home)
  • Requires sitting, operating a computer keyboard, telephone and other office equipment for extended periods of time
  • Travel requirements: 10% travel, domestic/international

$164,000 - $237,000 annually is the estimated pay range for this role working in Boston, Massachusetts office. The final amount will be determined based on qualifications & experience of the candidate relative to the role.
