Description
Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an adjunct
instructor Massage Therapy in the Business and Entrepreneurship Department. The adjunct Massage Therapy Instructor will perform a variety of routine duties, as needed, to teach massage, body work/therapy, therapeutic massage, or other therapy which involves the manipulation of the muscle and connective tissues of the body to students from different backgrounds, ethnicity, nationalities, gender, ages, religions, or disabilities in the classroom and in the lab, using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, demonstrations, and using audiovisual and technological aids to supplement the presentations. The adjunct instructor is responsible for providing thorough, meaningful, and measurable instruction for students interested in becoming licensed massage therapists. The purpose of the instruction is to provide students with the knowledge and understanding to achieve a passing grade on the North Carolina Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEX) and attain the necessary occupation-specific and employability skills for success in the Massage Therapy industry. Classes may be online and/or face-to-face.
Examples of Duties
  • Organizes program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills required in massage professions, and lectures on theory, techniques, and terminology; prepares outline of instructional programs and studies and assembles materials to be presented.
  • Instructs students in subject areas, i.e., use, maintenance, and the safe operation of tools and equipment, codes or regulations related to the Massage Therapy Program.
  • Instructs students in the significance of accuracy, sanitation, efficiency, resourcefulness and good work habits if obtaining employment or entrepreneurship as licensed Massage Therapists.
  • Assigns lesson to students and corrects homework; administers tests to evaluate achievement of students in technical knowledge and practical skills; records results.
  • Keeps records of daily attendance and student progress.
  • Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, discussions, or demonstrations; ensures use of classroom time is organized and that instruction and clean-up can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Assists students, individually or in-groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts; responds to basic student questions; may initiate study groups in preparation for exams.
  • Enforces classroom protocols, rules and regulations; maintains classroom discipline; utilizes effective classroom management techniques.
  • Assists students to develop and implement effective study skills, practices and provide quality instruction at all times to adult students, teaching classes for the entire class period and properly covering the curriculum and outline for computer instruction.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of competency-based education and utilize available educational resources for the improvement of instruction and the creation of teaching materials;
  • Provide input to the Director regarding student outcomes;
  • Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times;
  • Report to the Director any issues, concerns, or problems as it relates to the curriculum, instruction or student conduct/behavior.
  • Represent the college in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Massage Therapy licensure through the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy
  • 6,000 clock hours of verified occupational experiences in the specific trade to be taught
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (RECOMMENDED)

Work Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year teaching adult learners in an online environment (RECOMMENDED)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching adult learners in the skills of massage and bodywork therapy OR another discipline.

  • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate levels of authority as well as creating an atmosphere of support and confidence for students.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, students, and the general public.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to make presentations to students online or in a classroom.
  • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.

Normal Working Hours:
