Job description

Amazon Autos is reimagining the car-buying experience by bringing the trust, convenience, and customer obsession of Amazon to automotive retail. We're building a seamless online-to-offline journey that helps customers research, finance, and purchase vehicles with confidence. As we scale across OEMs, dealers, and metros, our design team plays a critical role in shaping a cohesive, world-class experience.

We are looking for a UX Designer with deep expertise in Design Systems and Visual Design to join the Amazon Autos team. In this role, you will be responsible for evolving and maintaining our design system, ensuring visual consistency across all customer-facing and dealer-facing touchpoints, and raising the bar on craft and quality. You will partner closely with product, engineering, research, UX and content teams to deliver polished, scalable design solutions that delight customers and drive business outcomes.

You will bring an AI-forward mindset to how the system is built, documented, and governed: using AI tools to accelerate component development, improve documentation quality, and explore how generative and agentic capabilities can make the design system smarter over time.
Key job responsibilities
Design System Stewardship: Own and evolve the Amazon Autos design system-defining, documenting, and maintaining reusable components, patterns, tokens, and guidelines that scale across web and mobile experiences. Leverage AI-powered tools to suggest, audit, and optimize design token structures across themes and platforms.

Visual Design Excellence: Craft high-fidelity UI designs with meticulous attention to typography, color, spacing, iconography, motion, and layout to ensure a premium, cohesive brand experience.
AI-Native UI Patterns: Design system components specifically for AI-powered experiences and natural language-to-UI interfaces where users or internal teams can describe a UI and have it generated from system components.
Component Design & Documentation: Design, spec, and document new components and patterns; partner with engineering to ensure accurate implementation and accessibility compliance.

Integrate AI tools to generate and maintain component documentation, usage guidelines, and changelogs to keep the system current at scale.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, UX designers, researchers, product managers, and content designers to translate business and customer needs into elegant, systematic design solutions.
Consistency, Quality & Governance: Audit existing experiences for visual and interaction inconsistencies; propose and drive improvements that elevate the overall product quality.

Establish rules between AI-generated layouts and human-validated reviews to secure brand alignment, ensuring design system governance keeps pace with AI-accelerated workflows.
Contribution to Broader Design Culture: Share best practices, conduct design reviews, and mentor peers on systems thinking and visual craft. Contribute to team rituals, critiques, and knowledge sharing.

Prototyping & Storytelling: Create interactive prototypes and compelling design narratives to communicate ideas, gain alignment, and validate concepts with stakeholders and customers. Utilize prompt-driven prototyping and generative AI to rapidly explore design directions within system constraints.
Basic Qualifications
-3+ years of professional experience in UX/UI design with a focus on design systems and/or visual design
-A portfolio demonstrating visual design craft, systematic thinking, and end-to-end product design work
-Proficiency in modern design tools (e.g., Figma) including component libraries, auto-layout, variables/tokens, and prototyping
-Experience building, scaling, or contributing to a design system (component libraries, style guides, pattern documentation)
-Familiarity with AI-assisted design workflows, including prompt-driven prototyping, generative design exploration, or AI-powered design-to-code tools
-Strong understanding of responsive design, accessibility standards (WCAG), and platform conventions (web, iOS, Android)
-Ability to articulate design rationale and influence cross-functional partners
Preferred Qualifications
-Experience working on consumer-facing products at scale (e-commerce, marketplace, or automotive)
-Familiarity with motion design principles and tools (e.g., After Effects, Principle, Figma prototyping)
-Experience with design token architecture and handoff workflows with front-end engineering, including AI-powered token management and optimization
-Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, React) sufficient to collaborate effectively with developers
-Experience writing structured, machine-readable design documentation (e.g., DESIGN.md) optimized for consumption by LLM agents and automated tooling
-Experience conducting or integrating usability research findings into design system decisions
-Experience using AI-powered design-to-code tools (e.g., Figma Dev Mode, Kiro, Claude, or similar) to streamline handoff and accelerate front-end implementation
-Experience designing natural language-to-UI systems where users describe interfaces and components are generated programmatically
-Experience internationalizing design systems, including support for RTL languages, locale-specific typography, spacing adaptations, and culturally responsive UI patterns
-Demonstrated ability to balance long-term systems thinking with near-term delivery needs in a fast-paced environment
