On Call Sports Software Engineer information

What is an on call sports software engineer?

An On Call Sports Software Engineer is a software professional who is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting sports-related software systems during designated on-call periods. These engineers ensure that live sports applications, data feeds, and platforms remain operational, especially during high-traffic events. Their work often involves rapid incident response, debugging, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve issues quickly. They may also contribute to improvements in system reliability and performance based on their on-call experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call sports software engineer?

To thrive as an On Call Sports Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, Java, or C++), experience with software troubleshooting, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with sports data APIs, real-time systems, cloud platforms, and version control tools like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to stay calm under pressure are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure reliable, high-performance software support during critical live sports events when immediate issue resolution is essential.

How does being an on call sports software engineer impact work-life balance, and what strategies help manage the unpredictability of the role?

As an On Call Sports Software Engineer, you may be required to respond to urgent technical issues during live sporting events, often outside regular business hours. This can impact work-life balance, especially during peak sports seasons or major events. Many professionals in this role find it helpful to establish clear communication with their team, use effective incident management tools, and rotate on-call duties to prevent burnout. Proactive monitoring and thorough documentation can also minimize disruptions, ensuring you’re prepared to handle incidents efficiently while maintaining personal well-being.

Job description

Engineering Hybrid · HQ Texas Full-Time $140,000 – $150,000 / yearly

Software Engineer

Asher Health | Dallas / Richardson, TX (Hybrid) | Full-Time

About Asher Health

Asher Health is building the compliant infrastructure layer for modern longevity and wellness medicine. We help wellness businesses, clinics, gyms, and healthcare operators launch and scale programs around medical weight loss, longevity medicine, labs, supplements, and preventive health — without needing to build the infrastructure themselves.

We move quickly, care deeply about product quality, and expect high ownership from everyone on the team.

(Sorry, at this time we are unable to sponsor for this role. Applicant must be a US citizen. Applicant must also be close enough to be onsite in our Plano, TX office.)

Role Overview
We are hiring a mid-level Software Engineer to contribute across our front-end and back-end engineering, with some production support and DevOps responsibilities. Our platform is built on a microservices architecture spanning three external-facing portals and one internal administrative portal sharing a common back-end.

You will implement features, build and maintain services, and support production reliability, working alongside our Senior Software Engineer and offshore development team. This role is primarily software engineering, with meaningful exposure to infrastructure, deployment, and operational support – not a dedicated DevOps or support-only position.

Responsibilities

Software Engineering

● Build and maintain front-end features using React, following the established design system and component library
● Develop and maintain Node.js microservices supporting front-end and platform functionality
● Contribute to API design and service-to-service integration across the microservices architecture
● Write clean, testable, well-documented code and participate actively in code reviews
● Collaborate with the Senior Software Engineer and offshore development team on feature delivery and
technical design
● SQL proficiency – able to query databases and interpret results

DevOps & Infrastructure

● Support and improve CI/CD pipelines for microservices deployment
● Assist with AWS infrastructure configuration, deployment, and monitoring. We use Terraform to
implement infrastructure-as-code.
● Contribute to infrastructure-as-code practices as the microservices footprint grows
● Monitor service health and performance, and help identify and resolve operational issues

AI-Native Development

● Use AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude, Copilot, or equivalent) as a core part of daily development workflow.
It is critical, however, to have a good understanding of programming – AI is just an assistant and tool.
● Apply AI tooling to accelerate development, debugging, and production issue resolution

Production Support

● Participate in triage and resolution of production issues during US business hours
● Investigate application-level issues, escalating to the Senior Engineer or offshore team when needed

● Document incidents and resolutions to help improve team triage processes
● Coordinate with the Operations team on issue intake and status updates

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience contributing to or maintaining design systems or component libraries
● Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
● Familiarity with monitoring/observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, or similar)
● Experience in a production support or on-call engineering capacity
● Background in healthcare, compliance, or regulated industry environments, including HIPAA or SOC 2
compliance
● Experience in a startup or high-growth environment

What We Offer

● Competitive compensation at Dallas market rate
● Hybrid work model (4 days in-office) – Dallas / Plano / Richardson, TX preferred
● Broad engineering exposure across front-end, back-end, and infrastructure
● Direct mentorship from the Senior Software Engineer
● Clear growth path as the engineering team scales
