Summary: The Shop Manager direct leadership to the shop team, including technicians, managers, assistants, and pilot car drivers, ensuring strong performance and adherence to safety and operational standards. It oversees all aspects of shop operations-planning, timely invoicing, preventive maintenance, inventory accuracy, budgeting, and compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA regulations. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining efficient procedures, performance standards, and cost-effective maintenance practices across all rolling assets.

Diesel Shop Manager Job Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Direct oversight and planning of the company shop and rolling assets.
  • Create and maintain efficient shop performance standards (standard repair times (SRT's) KPI's, procedures (SOP's) and policies.
  • Maintain strict adherence to company operations, safety policies, and develop/amend SOP's as needed.
  • Adherence and awareness of all DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA rules/regulations.
  • Create and assure the accuracy of parts inventories and monitory cost versus budget.
  • Maintain department budget to control maintenance costs relating to personnel, purchasing, inventory control and outsourcing of repairs.
  • Ensures drivers are invoiced in a timely manner.
  • Oversee vehicle preventive maintenance schedules and process.
  • Interview, train and coach subordinate staff members and complete employee assessments and performance reviews.
  • Be a strong leader for the company's retention efforts with your entire staff through encouragement, coaching and active participation within your department and throughout the entire company.
  • Direct supervisory staff in the planning of rolling stock repair and maintenance jobs.
  • Operate and utilize computerized diagnostic and other tracking systems.
  • Provide reports to senior leadership weekly/monthly.
  • Perform all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Create and implement a business plan for area of responsibility including processes, protocols and procedures to streamline productivity and set benchmarks. Update as necessary.
  • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Develop relationships with OEM's, outside vendors to ensure current, future technology and outside assistance.
  • Develop a written Safety and Health Program, Hazard Communication Program, PPE Assessment – Written Hazard Assessment, Powered Industrial Truck training and certification.

  • Minimum 5-10 years parts, with truck experience a plus
  • Knowledge of Maintenance TMS software
  • Experience or certification with specific manufacturer is a plus
  • Computer and point-of-sale proficiency
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record – CDL preferred
Physical Requirements:
  • Employee is required to sit approximately 50%, stand 25%, and walk 25% of work time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds at times.
  • Able to travel as needed.
