What is an on call perfusionist?

On call perfusionists are specialized healthcare professionals who operate heart-lung machines and other equipment during surgeries, especially open-heart procedures, and are available to work outside regular hours as needed. Their primary responsibility is to manage the patient’s circulatory and respiratory functions when the heart is stopped for surgery. Being 'on call' means they must be ready to respond to emergencies or urgent surgical cases at any time, including nights, weekends, or holidays. This critical support ensures that life-saving surgeries can proceed safely, regardless of when they occur.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call perfusionist?

To thrive as an On Call Perfusionist, you need a solid background in cardiovascular physiology, perfusion technology, and a degree in perfusion science or related field, along with certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP). Familiarity with heart-lung machines, blood gas analyzers, ECMO systems, and sterile techniques is essential. Strong decision-making, stress management, and effective communication skills help manage critical situations and coordinate with surgical teams. These abilities are vital to ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes during cardiac surgeries and emergency interventions.

What are some common challenges faced by on call perfusionists and how can they prepare for them?

On Call Perfusionists often face the challenge of responding to urgent cases at unpredictable hours, which requires flexibility and the ability to work under pressure. They must be prepared to quickly assess and set up complex perfusion equipment in high-stress situations, often with limited information. Effective communication with the surgical and anesthesia teams is essential to ensure patient safety. Staying organized, maintaining proficiency with equipment, and practicing good self-care can help manage the demands of being on call.

The main difference is that On Call Perfusionists are available for emergency and scheduled surgeries outside regular hours, often working on an on-call basis. Perfusionists typically work scheduled shifts during standard hours. Both roles require the same certifications and work in similar environments, but On Call Perfusionists provide flexibility for urgent procedures.

How much do on call perfusionists make?

On call perfusionists typically earn an hourly wage that ranges from $50 to $150, with annual salaries often between $100,000 and $200,000 depending on experience, location, and certification. They may receive additional compensation for emergency or overnight calls and work in hospital settings requiring specialized skills with perfusion equipment.

? Provide coverage for scheduled PTCA (angioplasty) cases, usually at the end of the working day

? Review the patient record in CPRS before surgery to understand the surgeon's plan of care, and document in CPRS immediately after each procedure

Equipment and Supplies:

? Maintain and calibrate VA-owned equipment - cell savers, heater-coolers, balloon pumps, VADs - per manufacturer specifications and schedules, and document maintenance activity

? Perform quality control and preventive maintenance on all perfusion equipment
