Job description

Join the transformative team at City of Hope, where we're changing lives and making a real difference in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. City of Hope’s growing national system includes its Los Angeles campus, a network of clinical care locations across Southern California, a new cancer center in Orange County, California, and treatment facilities in Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix. Our dedicated and compassionate employees are driven by a common mission: To deliver the cures of tomorrow to the people who need them today.

Help advance a strong culture of safety across City of Hope’s clinical and research environments. The Lab Safety Specialist provides technical guidance, training, compliance support, and risk assessments for enterprise-wide biological and laboratory safety programs.

This role helps ensure that institutional policies, procedures, equipment, and operations align with federal, state, local, and organizational requirements. It is an exciting opportunity to apply your scientific knowledge, strengthen safe laboratory practices, and support teams whose work is transforming the future of patient care.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Support safe practices involving hazardous materials, recombinant DNA, and infectious agents, including risk assessments and reviews associated with IBC and IACUC activities.

  • Assist with developing, reviewing, and implementing safety policies and programs that meet institutional and regulatory requirements.

  • Conduct inspections, training, and compliance reviews to help ensure safe operations and properly maintained safety equipment.

  • Monitor exposure and contamination-control practices and maintain records related to biological, chemical, and industrial hygiene activities.

  • Monitor hazardous-waste disposal practices at City of Hope and off-campus facilities and participate in regulatory inspections as needed.

  • Ensure personnel receive required training and that significant incidents or accidents are reported to the appropriate regulatory committees and leadership.

  • Assess facility hazards, review plans, and provide technical guidance to mitigate new or existing risks.

  • Investigate exposures, incidents, and accidents involving biological, chemical, or other hazardous materials.

  • Participate in hazardous-spill response and emergency response as a member of the on-call Occupational Safety and Health team.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, biology, chemistry, or another related science.

  • Two years of experience in general Environmental Health and Safety, clinical or biological safety, or industrial hygiene. Laboratory research experience is preferred.

  • Familiarity with NIH guidelines and OSHA standards related to biological and chemical safety in clinical and research laboratories.

  • Knowledge of hazardous-waste regulations, permits, management practices, laboratory processes, and common laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to work in clinical or laboratory environments where biological, chemical, physical, and other hazards may be present, wear specialized personal protective equipment, respond to emergencies, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
