What is an on call nurse?

On call nurses are registered nurses who are available to work as needed outside of regular shift hours, often to cover staff shortages, emergencies, or increased patient demand. They may be called in at any time, including nights, weekends, or holidays, depending on the healthcare facility's needs. On call nurses must be flexible, adaptable, and ready to respond quickly to urgent situations. Their responsibilities can include patient care, administering medications, and assisting with procedures. This role is common in hospitals, clinics, and home healthcare settings.

How does the on-call schedule typically impact work-life balance for an on call nurse?

As an On Call Nurse, your schedule often involves irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on patient needs and employer requirements. This can present challenges in maintaining a consistent work-life balance, as you may need to respond to urgent calls with little notice. Many organizations try to rotate on-call shifts among nursing staff to help distribute the workload and reduce burnout. Clear communication with your team and strong organizational skills are essential to managing these demands effectively.

How much do on call nurses get paid for being on call?

On call nurses typically earn between $2 to $10 per hour for being on call, in addition to their regular hourly wages. Compensation varies based on the healthcare facility, location, and whether they are required to respond to calls or emergencies during their on call period.
