Job description

SUMMARY

The Water/Wastewater Utilities Apprentice assists with the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of Grand Targhee Resort's wastewater treatment facility and water utility systems. Working under the direction of the Water/Wastewater Manager, this position supports treatment operations, laboratory testing, regulatory sampling, water meters, collection and distribution systems, and other resort utility functions.

This is a developmental position requiring continued learning and progression toward required water and wastewater operator certifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Wastewater Treatment & Plant Operations

  1. Develop a working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, structures, valves, air blowers, and associated equipment.
  1. Assist with plant operation, preventative maintenance, and preparation of the annual maintenance schedule in accordance with the O&M Manual.
  1. Assist with biosolids disposal, commercial grease trap maintenance, and pumping and disposal of waste from on-mountain portable and vault toilets once properly trained.
  1. Follow established procedures for the safe handling, processing, and testing of wastewater and potable water.

Monitoring, Sampling & Regulatory Compliance

  1. Assist with required water and wastewater sample collection, laboratory analysis, recordkeeping, and regulatory reports.
  1. Collect monthly, quarterly, annual, and triannual water samples in accordance with established sampling requirements.
  1. Maintain accurate daily records and required documentation.
  1. Assist with educating visitors about the treatment facility and its operations when appropriate.

Collection, Water & Distribution Systems

  1. Assist with maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems, water service lines, wells, distribution systems, and storage systems.
  1. Develop and maintain familiarity with water meter locations and sizes and assist with meter testing and installation.
  1. Develop a working knowledge of the raw water and SCADA systems.
  1. Follow applicable Confined Space Entry requirements and procedures.

Resort Utility Support

  1. Assist with monthly resort-wide propane readings, monitor tank levels, coordinate refilling, and monitor the propane vaporization system during winter operations.
  1. Maintain appropriate personal hygiene and sanitation practices due to the nature of the work.
  1. Perform other duties as assigned by the Water/Wastewater Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO SAFETY:

  1. Protect the safety of self, workers, and Grand Targhee Resort guests.
  1. Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay.
  1. Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to immediate supervisor.
  1. Follow all company and department safety policies and procedures as outlined in the Resort's Occupational Safety & Health Compliance Manual and department-specific procedures or manuals.
  1. Operate equipment safely so that it will not lead to injury to yourself or others.
  1. Drive in accordance with the law and Grand Targhee Resort policies.
  1. Have or acquire at the acceptance of the position the Hepatitis A and B, and Tetanus vaccine.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORK SCHEDULE

Grand Targhee Resort operates seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. Flexible working hours and on-call responsibilitieswillbe required at times based on business and operational needs. There is no guarantee of hours.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus, at the minimum, entry level experience or certification(s) within the fields of water utilities/water distribution or wastewater operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have or be able to obtain a valid driver's license
  • Ability and willingness to develop a working knowledge of water and wastewater treatment structures, valves, air blowers, and associated equipment.
  • Ability to follow operating, maintenance, sampling, safety, and recordkeeping procedures.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as training and experience progress.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Obtain a Level 1 Well Systems Operator Certification within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Obtain a Level 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, or higher, from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality within the first 1.5 years of employment.
  • Obtain a Level III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within 4 years of employment.
  • Continued progression in wastewater treatment certification is expected for operators.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts including proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to perform calculations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and accurately read and record measurements.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions provided in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to complete assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner with appropriate independence.
