What is an On Call Humana RN?

An On Call Humana RN is a registered nurse who provides healthcare support to Humana members outside of regular business hours, typically during evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays. Their primary responsibilities include triaging patient concerns over the phone, offering medical advice, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals. These nurses ensure that patients receive timely assistance with urgent medical issues, medication questions, or care coordination when their primary providers are unavailable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an On Call Humana RN?

To thrive as an On Call Humana RN, you need a valid RN license, strong clinical assessment skills, and experience in triage or case management. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and Humana’s internal systems is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure timely, accurate patient care and effective coordination across healthcare teams during after-hours or urgent situations.

What are some typical challenges faced by On Call Humana RNs, and how can they prepare for them?

On Call Humana RNs often encounter unique challenges such as managing high call volumes during peak times, quickly assessing patient needs remotely, and coordinating care with limited patient history. To prepare, it's important to develop strong time management and triage skills, stay up-to-date on Humana's care protocols, and maintain clear communication with the care team. Building familiarity with electronic health record systems and support resources provided by Humana can also help streamline your workflow and improve patient outcomes.

But you won't be doing it alone.

We're looking for a compassionate and confident Registered Nurse (RN) to join our on-call hospice team. This position offers a 7 days on / 7 days off schedule, giving you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while enjoying a predictable schedule and valuable time away from work.

Most importantly, you'll be part of a team that communicates, collaborates, and recognizes the important role you play in caring for our patients.

Why You'll Love Being Part of Our Team

Being on call requires clinical confidence and sound judgment — but it also requires knowing that you have people behind you.

At Serenity Hospice, we value our nurses and the expertise they bring to every patient interaction. You'll work closely with our interdisciplinary team to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time, and you'll have a team you can count on when questions or challenges arise.

We appreciate the nurses who answer the call, and we make sure they know it.

What You'll Do

As an On-Call Hospice RN, you'll provide compassionate, skilled support to patients and families during after-hours needs, helping them remain comfortable and supported wherever they call home.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing skilled nursing care, symptom management, and urgent interventions
  • Assessing patient needs and using strong clinical judgment to determine appropriate interventions
  • Providing compassionate guidance, education, and reassurance to patients and families
  • Communicating and coordinating care with the interdisciplinary hospice team
  • Documenting patient care accurately and in a timely manner
  • Serving as a calm, knowledgeable, and compassionate resource when patients and families need support most
What We're Looking For
  • Active Pennsylvania RN license required

  • Hospice or home health experience preferred
  • Strong assessment, clinical judgment, and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patient-centered approach and genuine compassion for others
  • Ability to work independently while remaining connected to the care team
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
What We Offer

We believe taking care of our patients starts with taking care of our employees.

You can expect:

  • 7 days on / 7 days off schedule for greater work-life balance
  • Competitive compensation
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • 401(k) enrollment options
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • A supportive, mission-driven team that values your contribution
  • Collaborative care and communication with an experienced interdisciplinary team
  • A culture where nurses are respected, supported, and appreciated
  • The opportunity to use your skills to make a profound difference in the lives of patients and families

Come be part of Serenity Hospice, where you can make a meaningful difference for patients and families while being part of a team that has your back.
